Accuracy tall tales..,

Well in fairness he didn’t specify how many belts it would take with the m249

eta when I was competitive my guess is I could get a 1st round hit on that maybe 20% and a 2nd round hit maybe 40%. But my misses wouldn’t be too far off.

I do note he did not state a hit cold bore first shot, nor was there any specifics about how many rounds downrange to achieve consistent hits. Only said 'we can hit this'. Well, yeah. Give me a solid rest and some sighters to call wind and there's a fair chance we can coach most shooters on target with possibility of an X.

i'd like to clarify my post above was with a S&B 5-25x optic and a 6.5x47L or 260AI bolt gun. My best string with a gas gun at 600 yards with probably 99 with 7x, which means 7 hits in a 6" circle out of 10 shots. granted that was iron sights and i might have done a little better with a 4x acog but i don't actually believe i could see that little red ball @600 with a 4x acog. and assuming that ball is about 2" diameter, that would be about 11% of the area of a 6" x ring. not great odds

He only said they used the one rifle with optics, not the other firearms. Didn’t say “first time, every time”

I had a friend who was hands down the best shooter I’ve ever seen. We had a medium size soup can sitting at maybe 75-100 yards. I saw him hit it standing with a .45-70 lever action probably six shots in a row. Another time he shot four running coyotes with five shots with a .44 mag revolver. The shot that missed hit a sapling or it probably would have hit too. Another time he hit a buck running at full speed dead in the heart at about 60 yards with the same revolver.

The two three shot groups below were shot by my S-I-L with my Varminter AR. I watched him shoot them. If I told you he could shoot dime size groups at 268 yards, I’m sure you’d have a hard time believing it, as I would.

I’ve found it’s better to not judge the abilities of others by my abilities.

I do not think he said they could hit the ball every time or all the time, only that they could hit it. He did not specify that he/they could do it with all the displayed weapons, only that they were proficient with those weapons. He did not say he was not proficient with a Model 700 7mm Rem Mag sniper rifle either!

Really, he was just trying to stir some interest among his comrades to join the team, I do not see the issue. Kind of a double dog dare.

Besides I can hit that ball at 600 yards, well, maybe once in a while, okay, maybe once, yes, well, Hell will freeze over before I hit that ball at 600 yards ;).

I don’t think the young man was bragging, just promoting the service rifle team to recruit new members.

I’m lucky enough to have some of the best service rifle shooters in the country at my home range and compete with them at our monthly high power matches.

As far as what’s capable….

A couple of years ago I witnessed one of our service rifle shooters break the 600 yard club record with a 600-50x aggregate. That’s all 60 shots for record inside the 12” 10 ring with 50 of them inside the 6” X ring.

He did it shooting a .223 AR, prone, slung up, with a 4X optic. Impressive to say the least.

My best target at 600 yards during a match was a 200-14x. That’s on a reduced F Class target where the 10 ring is 6” and the X ring is 3”.

Of course this isn’t with an unsupported service rifle with low power optic shooting .223s. It’s very customized 6mm target rifle on a front rest and a 10-50x scope.

Taking all of that into consideration, I’ll leave it to everyone to determine how frequently even the best of the best can hit a 2” target at 600 yards

I've shot with some SD All Guard team members. They're not as good as WI all Guard, but they have some shooters that'll run a pretty good X count slow prone.

Now, that rifle appears to be a decked out "service rifle" with a low magnification optic. Probably capable of MOA or better groups from a bench at closer ranges. Spread those a little for prone/sling, and spread those a lot for wind. Under ideal conditions, I've seen a top shooter (WI guard) fire a 200-12X slow fire at 600 with a similar rifle. That's a lot bigger than that little ball. I was pulling his target, and he had a few pinwheels that would have hit that little ball. A stretch? Absolutely. You can barely see that ball or a shot spotter in a 4.5x scope at 600 yards. Can a good shooter hit it a few times out of 20 rounds? Absolutely.

I think the point of the video was to build a WOW factor to get some interest. As we know, everybody who's shot a deer at 75 yards once in their life wouldn't be impressed by a 6" ball the size of the SR-6 X ring, so they had to go with a little one.

I bought a sawed off 16ga Iver Johnson Champion from a guy at a gunshow one time who told me he had shot deer with it with a slug at 175 yards.

I worked in a mom and pop gun store for ten years after retirement. The b.s. stories I heard would fill an encyclopedia. Once in a great while, I'd smile and say, "Dang! I'd pay fifty bucks to see that!"
"You sayin I'm A liar?"
"No. I'd really pay to see that. Never seen it done. When can we go? My club. Anywhere."
Never had a taker.
BS talks, money walks.

A kid I went to high school with shot a remarkably large doe with a slug at a claimed 200 yards. His buddies that were with him backed up the claim, but they were better known for smoking weed than their marksmanship skills so I’ve always been extremely skeptical, but hey, even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut.

A friend of mine shot a doe in a dead sprint at 250 yards with two shots. Deer piled up after second shot. Found two holes both within 2 1/2 inches in the boiler room. Wouldn’t have believed it but four of us watched him do it.

He also made an absolute ridiculous 350 ish yard shot on a small buck jumping a fence. He shot as it jumped and it fell dead on the other side. Same thing I saw it happen or I’d have thought he was full of it.
He’s always made shots like that. He can’t shoot much and all he has is a Savage 110 270 he lost the magazine to but put an animal out there and he’ll kill it dead. I believe some people just have the gift.
