I'm looking for a good source of accurate statistics regarding firearm fatalities in the United States, specifically in regard to caliber lethality. I am particularly interested in numbers of individuals fatally wounded from rimfire ammunition, such as the .22 LR.

My reason for requesting this information is in the interest to inform some aquaintances of mine about the .22 LR since they seem convinced that it could not effectively kill a human, I tend to disagree. Of course, shot placement is essential but, in my experience it would seem to be potentially deadly without question.

I hope this doesn't seem too strange and I would greatly appreciate any responses, Thank you in advance.

Try the FBI Uniform Crime Reports.

2003 is the latest one available. Table 2.9 is murders listed by weapon, I'd wager the large majority of the 'handguns' category is from easily concealable saturday night mouseguns.

The WISQARS database....from the CDC. For the years they have, it is excellent.
