So, if the 30-06 and its brothers are long action cartridges, and the .308 and its brothers are short action cartridges, what is the .223? And any other .223 length cartridge. (6.5 grendel, .204 ruger, ect)

The 30-06 is actually a mid length cartridge. The long actions are the Ultra Mags and Weatherby, H&H class. The 30-06 is 3.34 long, same as 7MM Rem Mag and that class of cartridge. My Savage M10 in 223, 22-250 and 243 is the short action. The 223 is made in some down sized actions like the Interarms Mark X and the new Savage M25, but most 223 are in short actions. Most short cartridges are available in standard length actions, just the magazine box is shorter.

So, most bolt rifles use the same action length for the .223 and .308? I was wondering mostly becasue of how the AR and semis are set up, the .308 won't go in a '15, and it would be pointless to put a .223 in a '10.....

thanks for the replys.

Cartridges like the 30-06 are commonly refered to as long action and the 308 are short action. Others need an extra long action for some of the older magnum rounds.

In reality there are a lot of different action lengths depending on who makes the rifle. There are companies like CZ who build guns scaled just for the 223. Remingtons short action is a lot shorter than most others while a Savage short action is about the same length as a Remington Long action. A Savage long action is a loooong action, suitable for the really long Magnum rounds. The Remington 7 action is somewhere in between the long and short action model 700.
