Are short cartridges (e.g., 308 Win or 223 Rem) Savage rifles (in particular the Model 10) built on a long action or a short action?

short, unless your talking about the OLD 110s in .308 etc which were built on long actions only (iI THINK, its been a while since ive seen one of those guns).

The older 110 series guns were all built on a long action. The newer ones are both long and short action. The two digit numbers indicate a short action. Like 10, 11, 12, 16, etc. The three digit numbers, 110, 111, 112, etc. indicate a long action.

A word about Savage actions. While they offer both long and short actions, the loading and ejection port as well as the spacing between front and rear scope mounting holes is much greater than comparable rifles. I don't recall the exact measurements from memory, but the loading/ejection opening on a short action Savage is only about 1/16 or 1/8" shorter than most every one else's long actions. Their long actions are about 1/2-3/4" longer than every one else's long actions. I don't currently own a Savage, but measured them at one time. I think this causes some confusion. Looking at a short action Savage side by side with any other long action and they appear to be the same until you actually start measuring.

The greater distance between scope mounting holes can make it challenging to mount scopes, especially on long actions. Many scopes and scope mounts are simply too short to fit.

To add to Jmrs note, Savage short actions have a longer magazine box than standard shorts, but the longs are .30-06 length even tho the actions much longer.

Just mount a Picatinny or Weaver rail and matching rings.

To the OP, also be aware that there are two different lengths of Savage short action. Anything new is the shorter short action, but if yours is an older rifle be aware of this if you're looking at a new stock or chassis.
