A couple of months ago, my friend and his parents confronted me about gun ownership and why they think that it should be banned. In a debate that must have lasted upwards of two hours, I sat down and heard all of her reasoning why people shouldn't have firearms. I sat down and pulled up reputable information on the Internet in front of them that seemed to dispel some of their false beliefs that all people with guns are bad. At the time, they had no idea that I owned a firearm, only that I was a RKBA supporter. I walked them through the actual process they would have to go through in buying a firearm and everything. At the end of the conversation I felt that they had no more supported the RKBA than before ... something that I'm used to, so I payed it no attention.

Well a couple of days ago, I went over to my friends house to visit. When I got there, Him, his mom, his dad, and his little sister (25yo) were there as well. Apparently after hearing what I had to say about everything, along with showing them crime statistics for the area that they lived in (what they have always seen as a safe community) all four of them went out and not only looked into the topic much further, but actually purchased a firearm for each family member, but went out and got CWHL's and are taking bi-weekly classes from an NRA instructor I referred them to in Personal Protection in the Home, and Home Firearms Safety.

They still claim to be pro-gun control :banghead:, but I think we will just leave it at baby steps.

Baby steps or not, well done. Any little bit helps these days. Sometimes all it takes is a lttle logic.... go figure. :D

That's a little more than a baby step! And hey even if they're still gun control for now at least they're safer thanks to you.

That's my thought exactly. Now at least I can say that I sleep better knowing that I may have saved someones life, if not today, or tomorrow, then eventually...

If only more people were so open minded. I believe that a lot of people that are "anti", are only so because they believe the crap that the media shovels down their throats. Education is the answer, but when it comes to guns a lot of people won't even listen to simple reasoning.

Well done.

Shawn

Nice job. I am sure you are a good upstanding citizen and that helps too. Sort of like Starbucks saying it is ok to CCW if the state allows it. Your friend and his family associated gun ownership with the good guys, not just the bad guys.

I think that for most people gun control seems to mean background checks.

The thread about felons owning firearms is a good indication of that....

Right now it is 203 for and 287 against. And, most of both of those groups agree that only the violent or non-victimless felons should lose their privilege.

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=479651

I ask all of you that feel a violent felon should not have the right to own a gun... how do you do that without some form of gun control?

Maybe make felons carry a felon card and show it at the sale, prohibiting them? That is probably a stupid as it sounded when I typed it?

See the point, even those of use who love our guns, RKBA and all that goes with it understands there is a good argument to keep safeguards in place to prevent known violent felons from owning them.

NOT everyone. I understand that some feel the 2nd amendment is all that is required, and if everyone carried that there would be less violence but that argument starts to sound as extreme as those to the left of us.

Or another take on it, they are now in the camp of, "guns for me but not for you".

Outstanding job!

When they get a little trigger time and realize how much fun shooting is their views on gun control will probably change even more - perhaps they'll have a lightbulb moment when they realize the "gun nuts" that the other side villifies are actually good citizens like themsleves.

Wow. That's pretty impressive. Boy did they jump in with both feet!

Wow, better than a good job. Fantastic. Four new first time gun owners in one sweep. You should win a medal.

I don't have the patience to listen to anti gun stupidity, so I salute you for your effort. Inspiring, to say the least.

They still claim to be pro-gun control:banghead:

I'd wager a bet that they are no way in favor of being denied the right to do what they just did (arming themselves). IOW, they are more pro-gun than they even realize.

The only form of gun control I support is checking if someone is a felon before buying (we can discuss about the level of felony that become a firearm ownership disqualifier)

I agree in surrending your firearm during a commercial flight.

I support a "no firearm" zone in a bar.

We can discuss about guns in federal building, schools, etc..

Other than that, the 2A is my concealed carry permit...period.

If a store doesn't want guns in its premises it is their right but then I ask them to put metal detectors and guards to make sure that no guns come in...either from CCW holder customers or potential criminals....a sign on the door is pure hypocrisy

It's a baby step. Hold off on the champagne. They may own guns now but the minute some politician says he wants to ban "just the bad guns" to "keep the children safe" will they agree with him? If so, they're just as anti as ever.

Let's not discuss anything other than the topic at hand. Your views on a wide range of topics aren't what this thread is about.

That was exactly my point...I leave that discussion aside...

Just out of curiosity, what kind of guns did they buy?

now you just have to take them out shooting and make them fall in love with it

Coromo not sure if that was directed at me or saturno v, but my point was that they may be suffering from the same internal debate a lot of us suffer from - what is gun control.

It is a good thing when someone comes over from the "dark" side as they now see that many of the myths about guns and gun ownership are just that... myths... but they still have some fundamental "anti" sediment that maybe they are having a hard time cateloging...

haha... and if they grow tired of them you may be able to scoop them up cheap enough!

Well here's the thing. I was able to show them that there were 126 sexual batteries and 12 murders that occurred in a 5 mile radius of their home in the last year. They believed that they were in a community that had no crime, and that they were safe because nothing had happened to them.

They didn't really just jump in with both feet, they spent a couple of weeks looking into it...itink its something that they'll stick with.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of guns did they buy?

they bought practical guns for them to carry and not get in the way.

Mom: Ruger LCP
Dad: Kel Tec PF-9
Friend: Springfield XD-9 (either compact or sub compact...idont remember)
Sister: Ruger LCP (I guess they made a pink one...)
