I want to add a few shelves to my safe and already have the wood for them. I would like to cover them to provide a better surface for the firearms to rest on.

Just curious what I should be using for that material. Does it really matter or just find something.

I found some carpeting at Home Depot that would work, but is that what I should be using. I thought about the material used to cover speaker boxes, but that is a little hard to come by locally.

I'm looking for ideas, recommendations, or guidance on what I should be looking for or what I should avoid. Also, I don't want to have to order it. I would like to get it at a local store.

I was definately thinking speaker box carpet.

I don't see where you live, but most places have a shop that deals with stereos and installs, a town near me which isn't very big has 3.

If you have a Home Cheapo you must have a stereo shop!

They may not have it in the showroom but ask for it. That's where I got mine.

I put six shelves in my safe. I built a shelf system out of wood then surfaced them with carpet with a rubber bottom side. It bought the rubber carpet in the door section of Home Depot. It came in the form of an outdoor carpet mat. You know the one you put on the porch to wipe your feet on before you enter the house. I cut out the shelf size and used brush on glue that sticks on contact. It cost a total of 8 dollars and an hour to build the complete project.

Thanks for the tips and ideas. I'll take a look at HD tomorrow for the floor mat. If I'm not satisfied with that I'll had to a stereo shop.

I'm not certain, but by the feel of some speaker boxes, wouldn't that material be mildly abrasive to a firearms finish? I recommend a soft low-pile carpet, or a velvet material that you can find in the craft/sewing section of most walmarts.

I used the Home Depression indoor/outdoor carpet in mine. But spray it down with silicon or gun oil to keep moisture from collecting on it and to protect the guns finish.

go to a place that sells HVAC suff

They sell closed cell foam (its insulation for air ducts) it is about 1/2" thick and comes in a roll with a peel & stick adhesive backing, so you can peel and stick it to your shelves(ever wrap it around the front), and it gives you a nice soft, non-scratching surface. Or you could just leave the backing on if you want. Its easy to work with too. All that you need is sissors or a razor knife and a straight edge of some kind.

Added a couple extra shelves by fabricating some 10 gauge sheet metal. Got fabric from a local fabric shop, sprayed adhesive on both serfaces and covered the shelves. Couple of screws and they attach to bottom of existing shelves.
