So I bought an old Remington 1100 Magnum for $250. There doesn't seem to be a thing wrong with it, but the previous owner had the buttstock cut down to youth dimensions. It was done professionally; you can't tell by looking that anything isn't factory, unless it's next to a gun with a standard LOP.

It looks like they cut 2" off the buttstock.

Is there a good way to add the length back?

I'm thinking I can bandsaw a piece of walnut, shape it with a rasp and sandpaper to fit, then finish it, add a buttplate to it and screw it on to the existing stock.

Anyone ever done this?
Is it difficult to get a good fit?
Does it look okay?
Any better ideas?
Should I just suck it up and buy a replacement buttstock?

Thanks!

It can be done,Bear, but buying a new stock is lots easier and not much more ccstly. You may be able to sell that stock off to someone needing a short LOP.

How about a Graco recoil reducer that can add up to one inch of LOP with a 1+ inch recoil pad? That will get you 2" back and the ability to adjust the LOP down for winter when you are wearing heavy clothes.

Until you can get a new stock, you can add one of those slip-on pads. They add like an inch and a half or so.
Or you could buy a flak jacket to wear when shooting. :D

adjust the LOP down for winter

Hmmm... I've heard of this "winter" thing. I've always wondered about it. Sounds like something strange and mysterious.:D

9mm, I could also get a few of those gel anti-recoil things to strap on my shoulder, but maybe I can get a flak jacket surplus!

Good point, Dave. This stock might be worth something as-is, to someone with a growing kid and an aversion to chopping off the regular stock.

It is probably true that, by the time I've found and bought some walnut that matches the wood, shaped it, finished it, etc., I will wish I'd have just bought a buttstock!

Thanks all.

Anyone recommend a good place to get stocks? I know I can get a factory replacement from Remington, Numrich, et al., or a plastic one from all the usual suspects, but is there a good aftermarket stockmaker who doesn't want $500 for a walnut buttstock? Or is there another source you've liked?

Armed,
I'm doing the same thing right now, but for different reasons. My hunting buddy is 6'7" tall and need a LOP that is 16". I am cutting 1" spacers from walnut and adding a recoil pad. Will sand them down to fit using a sanding station with a belt and disc sander. It works very well and is not difficult, but it does take a few hours to do it right.

You can buy a synthetic stock at most sporting goods store for $40-$50 or check ebay for Rem stock.

Winter..... my brother lives in San Diego. I "hear" about the weather all the time. Poor you, never get to play in the snow.......

I have bought many stocks from ebay in the past. Often you can find diamonds in the rough there for pretty cheap.

www.gunbroker.com will oft times have stocks as well.

Were I you, I'd buy a used wood stock and take that opportunity to also buy a Decelerator recoil pad. It is far easier and less stressful to fit a nice pad to the stock during the refinish process.

I added a 3/4" piece of Poplar to my Citori. I cut it down with a table saw and then sanded it with a belt sander. It took a fair amount of fitting and sanding and fitting and sanding.

I purchased longer screws at the local hardware store and lined up the holes. It looks great. The grain is in the wrong direction but it is very functional.

It worked so well that I'm working on a pseudo Monte Carlo version for my A-5.
