I've got a Cabela's Sporterized Hawken rifle. When I put it in the half cock position, I don't have any room to install the percusion cap. I have to put it on full cock.

Is there a way to adjust the hammer position so it is farther back on half cock?

Thanks

There is no way to adjust it, but pull the lock off and inspect the end of the sear. It probably is broken off. You can replace that part. I've got a CVA like that. I learned to live with it.

I doubt that anything is broken off.
Not being able to cap the nipple while the hammer is on 1/2 cock is a known design "flaw" of the Investarms percussion locks. Their locks are basically identical clones of the TC locks right except for that one flaw. :)

One thing that I have heard about the GPR is that the half cock notch doesn't go back far enough to allow for capping the nipple, so the hammer needs to be brought back to full cock in order to cap the gun, then brought down to half cock to be on "safe". Despite being a suberb gun, this is considered by many to be a design flaw.

Arcticap's right, the Cabela's Hawken is made by Investarms, and that lock does have that one interesting design 'feature'; it's not indicative of a broken sear.

And by the way, half cock is not a 'safe' position.

This subject was recently debated on another muzzleloading forum; essentially, a member asked the correspondents how they handled the Lyman GPR (it has the same lock with the same 'feature') when carrying in the field. About 1/3 said they carried uncapped and only capped when in a blind or hunting from cover. Another 1/3 said they carried hot (capped and either full or half cock) pointing the muzzle in a safe direction and decapping or using a hammer stall when climbing into a blind, over a fence or a stream. The final 1/3 said they carried capped with a hammer stall installed.

I have to put it on full cock.
Actually, you do not.

1) Half cock the piece.
2) Cradle the forend in the crook of your left arm, muzzle to the sky.
3) Hold you inline capper in your left hand, to the gun's right.
4) With your right thumb, fingers away from the trigger, ease back the hammer just enough to cap, then return the hammer to rest on half cock.

ONLY DO THIS IF YOUR HAMMER CLEARS YOUR CAPPED NIPPLE AT HALF COCK.
