Several years ago I bought a Glock 21 on the advice of my brother-in-law, because: it was my first handgun, it was easy to fire, and I had the large hand size for it. A year later I sold it because of cash needs. Said brother-in-law then made me a deal on a S&W 645 that he had picked up from an estate. I really like the gun, despite the weight (it fits my hand well), and it's fairly accurate, even for a poor shooter like myself.

I'm looking to expand my meager collection, and I'm looking for suggestions. Based on my preference for the 645, what other guns (new or used) should I look at? I like the .45 round (I do have a Walther 38, so am familiar with 9mm) and I'd like to stay with that.

Thanks.

If you've never handled one, try a 1911. I fell in love with the trigger, the safety, and the metal. I've had several polymers, but that just felt good in my hands.

S&W 4566 is always a good choice for HD, target shooting, woods carry, etc...
The only thing I would say it's not a good choice for is CCW and that's only because of size.

Well, if you like the 645, you'd probably like the 4506/4566 even more. The -1 series have the 10xx frame and slide dimensions, and are the strongest .45 auto pistols out there. They can handle .45 Super without modification, though a heavier recoil spring is a good idea for a steady diet of the stuff.

Other than that, we need more input on what you're looking for.

And everyone should have a 1911..........

I guess I should have mentioned use. Range outings, and possibly home defense, like a bedside gun. It wouldn't be for concealed carry, so size and weight wouldn't be an issue. I'm looking for something reasonably priced; I like to pick up the occasional milsurp rifle, so the budget has to also allow for that.

Colt 1911 or a Sig P220, or a good 1911 clone, for larger hands in a polymer try H&K USP 45 maybe an USP Expert. For really big hands a MK23. I own all but the Mk23, If I could only have one... Colt or SIG can't decide each has a purpose both are quality pistols. I love my 1911s but if I could only own 1 pistol it woud be a toss up between my SIG P220 and SIG P226. The Colt 1911 is a working piece of art, form and function, the SIGs form follows function, true weapons to save a life. The P226 in .40S&W sits on my night stand, get night sights for HD. I have owned the P226 since 2000 and have 20K plus in .40 and about 3000 rounds of .357SIG without any, any failures ever. Not 1 ftf, fte or misfire, slide always locks back, always goes bang.

I bought the new FNX 9 a few weeks ago, and i love it. IMO FN is one of the least talked about firearms (outside of military) and they are outstanding. Give it a try if you can, you wont be disappointed.
