Did a search for "after market barrels" and didn't find anything worth while - although I didn't dig too deep either. Please paste an old thread if you know of a helpful one.

Question:
Are after market barrels as good as they are made out to be?

I am getting ready to pickup a Storm Lake 9mm Semi-Drop-in Conversion barrel for my .40 S&W M&P to shoot a little cheaper at the range. However, I have read and heard that after market barrels can perform better than factory barrels in most cases - yielding tighter groups and less mis-feeds. And for all you "Glock Heads" I have read that this is particularly true for your guns of choice.

For $98 plus the cost of a new magazine I can turn my rig into a 9mm for range use - and keep my beloved .40 for Defense/Carry. Before I buy the 9mm conversion should I also look into replacing the factory .40 with a Storm Lake barrel as well? I say Storm Lake mostly because it's all I can really find for a S&W M&P.

Let me hear what you got on this...

On an unrelated note:
What is "bonded" ammo - rather what makes ammo "bonded" and what good is that to me?

Thanks.

Is there something more than just the barrel and mag change to
9MM Luger from .40 S&W? I'm curious as to how the smaller
diameter case is 1) supported and 2) extractor hookup?

I have an aftermarket barrel from Jarvis Inc. It's for my 1911
I haven't looked at the other options Jarvis offers
except I know they offer a Glock model - mentioned it to my
shooting buddy who has a G19.

Have you found any aftermarket barrel makers for CZ's ? I'm not
really in the market for one, just would like to know if/when barrel makers
start supporting CZs.

Bonded means the bullet maker has figured out a way to
ensure the Jacket doesn't seperate from the core - beullet
weight retention/integrity.

You know - I hope there isn't much more to converting my M&P to a 9mm than what I said - because if there is I am in trouble. I cannot find any info on it anywhere on the web. I have read how easy it is to convert Glocks to pretty much any other caliber that Glock makes, but am unsure about the M&P.

Is there anyone out there who can help me with what else might be needed for this conversion?

BlindJustice:
As for an after market for a CZ have you tried EFK or thegunsource.com - thegunsource.com has a lot of CZ selection and maybe the barrels to match.

Some people like the change the extractor. Personally I just have a mag and barrel for my G22. I have never had any issues. I have two after market barrels for my G22 they are usually more accurate because of a tighter fit. Jarvis makes a very good barrel but I wouldnt pay the price they are new I picked a new one off ebay for 125 before they stopped selling gun parts. My conversion barrel is a Lone Wolf G35 conversion barrel. It is an inch longer but functions fine and looks kind of cool especially with a 33 rd mag.

I have heard it is quite easy to do pretty much anything to a Glock. I am figuring that all I need for my M&P is a magazine and the barrel. Another hump to get over is that the barrel is semi drop-in not drop-in. There may be a need for some fitting - according to Storm Lake in most cases it functions as a drop-in. We will see how it goes when I make the conversion purchase.

You will have to let me know how it goes. I have thought about getting an M&P but havent because of the lack of aftermarket unlike the Glock. A 40 to 9 conversion might be enough reason for me to sell all my Glock stuff and buy a M&P.

Sometimes, all you need to do to convert .40SW mags to 9mm is to change the follower in the magazine. If you do it this way, you may discover that a 10-rd .40SW mag suddenly becomes a 12-rd 9mm mag.
