...I decided I didn't like the glossy finish. As I write the finish is dulling a little in the open air. I'm wondering if some really fine steel wool would buff the shine out when I'm done with one more coat. What do you think. It doesn't appear to be"high gloss". I'll play it by ear. THNX

Your first coat of what on what?

Sure. Fine steel wool will dull the finish.

What do we think about what?

Steel wool 0000

Will steel wool take the gloss down? Sounds like yes. Thanx, I'm putting a finishing coat on a junker stock I'm working for my old Ranger22. Looks a hundred times better than it did. I was very pleased that the wood came back to life. It'll be done in a day or so. I just want to take the shine down a bit. Beautiful cherry color though.:)

Yes, 0000 steel wool works fine to take the gloss off a finish. I've used it on two milsurp rifles that I had shellacked to knock down the gloss and make them look... well, more military :) Worked great.
