Age and Model of Regmington 700

Can you determine the age and model variation of a Remington 700 from the serial number? If so, could someone point me to a source of this information.

I picked up an older M700 this weekend. Looks to be a BDL (nice checkering, fore-end and grip caps, white line between elements of the Monte Carlo stock) chambered in 30-06.

The safety locks the bolt in place, so that gives me some idea of the age.

Came with a Simmons 6x scope, which I may replace with a 3x9 scope. Haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet, but hope to soon.

Remington Owners,

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values", the coding continues as follows:

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 11 - 12

* the years 1943 though 1953 had double letters: ie, MM = 1943

As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.

just curious? i have a bdl from the same time frame in 7mm, is your ported?
 
Based on your description, I'd say that is about right. My 700 BDL varmint special in .25-06 is from 1973, and looks like that (save that it has the bull barrel).

Remember those barrel codes, keep them on a card in your wallet if you go to estate sales. I've won more than a few real deals because somebody things something is newer than it is.
 
You can also get the age by emailing the serial number to [email protected] They may be able to tell you more about the model too, but I'm not sure. I emailed them to find the age of my wingmaster and they responded the next day.
