Air rifle for raccoon? Needs to be quiet

Try a .22 cal pellet rifle if you have one or a .177 pellet rifle where you get to pump it 10X. Noise from an air rifle or BB gun is easily tolerated in a neighborhood with out raising suspicion.

I got a 25cal gamo spring powered gun.
Ballisticly it matches a 22CB from a long gun, but the 22CB is quieter.
But if someone hears the spring powered pellet gun they aren't going to know what it is unless they also have one.

Someone heard me shooting my .20 Beeman R1 one time. You are right. They didn't know what it was. They thought I was shooting a .22LR rifle.

While I still lived with neighbors close by, I had a racoon decide to set up a den under my back patio.

Turned out a neighbor was feeding them. (This neighbor would rescue worms off the sidewalk after a rainstorm...but that's another story)

We trapped him, and while I was testing a 4-wheeler engine, dispatched him with a CB round at 6" out of a single shot rifle.

Nobody noticed...

One .22 CB and BB Cap were first invented for galley guns...

If you're looking for some good (fairly quiet) power from a non PCP, the Hatsan Carnivore 135 QE (Quiet Energy) in .30 caliber is a real thumper. I get 27-30 FPE with mine. I love my PCPs, but this will also do the trick for such pesting as you're looking for.

Ahh yes the old small engine trick.

When I was considering what to shoot problem coons with, I settled on my grand dad's old Savage pump .22, loaded with cci Quiet. With the long barrel it has, it is almost like it has a suppressor on it.

Yep. Got a Winchester 1890 pump from my uncle. CCI Quiets out of those long barrels are mighty silent medicine for pests. Have a store brand Mossberg 46b that is the same.

Seriously man, we need to hear this. I'm sure that even the moderators are saying "What the ,.,........."

Got one of these with the gas piston. Love it. I just wish the fiber optic sights adjusted better. I'm 59 and can't use iron sights quick and easy. Fiber optic seemed like a Godsend. But one click changed my poi by one and a half inches . And that's only in 25 to 35 yards! How is yours?

I didn't notice that much of a change, but I really didn't use the FO sights much past 10-11 yards or so.
Since those last pics were taken I've added a 2-7 x 32 scope.
I also used a 1x power 3 moa red dot for a while and actually really liked that as well.

CCI Quiet Segmented is my go to for quiet pesting. I too have a long barrel .22 rifle available, an old Remington Target Master single shot. It is very accurate and super quiet with the Quiets. I can also shoot the Aquila Colibri I think they are, just a primer charge, from my Ruger Single Six. But they will not work in any rifle I have, they stick in the barrel. CCI has a new Quiet Auto that supposedly is just hot enough to cycle the bolt on a Ruger 1022 so that could be become my powder burning pester alternative to my air rifles.

My Remington 725VTR (.25) and my Benjamin 392 Steroid (.22) would take a raccoon, both are north of 20 fpe. But raccoons can be tough animals to kill so it is needed to be close and accurate. This recent critter was making a mess of my bird feeders and I was worried for my blue bird trail yet again having dispatched his cousin a few weeks back with my 392. After trying to scare him off with my Mossberg 500 .410 I decided to trap him and relocate far away:

They love marshmallows. He was not happy and between the mess he made of my trap, messed in my truck and I got me and my truck covered in mud, I should have just shot him and fed him to my pet coyotes. At least they do not come in my garage and mess on my porch. They are much more well mannered and not nearly as pestiferous.
