Since shooting .22 rimfire in the backyard unfortunately isn't an option, I've been thinking of picking up an air rifle for some backyard plinking and to work on a little marksmanship between (rare :() trips to the range. I stopped by wally world today and they had a Crosman 760 for under $30 but I've read that the new production ones aren't very well made. I'd also prefer something a bit larger than that...

Does anyone know of a reasonably accurate air rifle for less than about $100?

Thanks

I had a Tech Force 79, which is a Chinese copy of the old Crosman 60. For 150 bucks it was incredibly accurate, and trouble free. They make it in both .177 and .22, it has a HUGE following and tons of aftermarket parts. I honestly would not look else where. The TF79 and family all share the same basic action etc.

You can get the basic TF78 for under 100 bucks.

I shot these with my TF79 at 25 feet, off hand, with peep sights, with a totally stock rifle other than the buttpad.

Thanks Storz and nice shooting! My only concern with that is the CO2 power source. They seem to have similar Tech Force spring rifles in the same price range like this one. Are the spring models comparable in performance to CO2?

Yeah. Do a search on that forum I sent ya. People have awesome accuraccy with the springers as well. Honestly TF all the way.

It all depends on how much you want to spend, the Crosman 760 does not cost more than one range visit with a good centerfire rifle. Even if it does not last foreever, you will see if you enjoy airgunning.

I enjoy quality and German, or British air rifles satisfy me more than the chinese copies that I have.

Good groups. I am not able to get quite as good with my RWS 94 (Spanish made)- what is wrong with mine? I haven't lubed in a while.

WHat is the accuracy in the Brit/German guns compare to these?

That Tech Force video looks pretty good - the Chinese guns are MUCH cheaper!

I ask, because I am a little disappointed in my RWS 94, and would like to shoot more. (Now that I know I cannot safely shoot .22 in the basement because of lead).

So:

1) If they are as accurate why European? (Which cost 2-3X as much)? Better wood/metal?

2) WHICH one to get? Compessaco, XB? What are the differences???

If this rifle is purely for punching paper and training then you will want a medium power spring piston rifle or a single stroke pneumatic. The magnum rifles are nice if you plan on doing any hunting or pest control, but the powerful springs can wear your arm out over long shooting sessions.

If it were my under $100 training rifle, I would buy the single stroke Daisy Powerline 953 Target Pro. it's very accurate, easy to pump over long sessions.

Also the Hammerli 490 would be a decent choice for a medium powered springer. Springers are harder to shoot accuratly due to the reverse recoil hitting before the pellet ever leaves the barrel, but if you can master the hold your basic rifle skills will vastly improve.

XB, Compesseco, Industry etc all come from the same factory in China - they are just relabeled here in the states and sold. I bought mine from Compesseco because I had heard really good things about their customer service, and I was not disappointed :)

Go a little higher than $100 and.......

.........get a Benjamin-Sheridan. Last I looked they go for around $125-$130. Those Chinese springers are pretty good though I used to have one til I got my Talon SS.

2260 has quite a bit of power, and would probably pierce the skin of the deer. I have a 2240 which is the pistol version of that rifle. I am not a hunter by any means but I am pretty sure its frowned (if not illegal) upon to shoot at an animal if you're not actually "hunting" it or in self defense from an attack etc.

Why NOT Chinese? They seem to clone the European, but at a fraction of the price.

Are they as accurate as their European counterparts?

I have read a few posts that say they recoil more - not as smooth - true?

What about the trigger - again, my RWS 94 is a bit creepy (not like reviews I read on the rifle).

^^ I did a TON of research before I bought my TF79 and everything was really positive. Honestly I wouldn't hesitate one bit to get one of the clones.

Anyone have links to WHY Spring vice CO2? Why under-lever vice cocking barrel? Side lever?

There are JUST too many choices...

Thanks.

^^ Ask around on www.yellowforum.com it is the home of everything air rifle on the net. Long story short, springers are more powerful, CO2 doesn't work so well in the cold. I like CO2 because you just reload and fire, and I am more into accuracy than power. I had a side cocking IZH-61 and it was pretty cool. I think side vs under vs barrel is just personal preferance for the most part.

What is your main purpose for the rifle? Hunting, target shooting, just blasting off pellets for fun? Answering those will help narrow down your choices :)

The poster BrianG2ad has a thread called Beeman R1 and this is my post in his thread.

Okay I may get laughed at but here goes. I bought one of the Beemans sold in walmart with 2 barrels. It came in 177 and 22 caliber. It cost $134+ change. It included a 4X scope also. And yes, its made in china.

In two days I have shot 450 177 pellets and about 50 22 pellets. I am impressed with the accuracy and most of all the power. It didn't shoot daisey pellets worth a flip. The Benjimen pellets will stay in a 3/4" group at 22 yards. Thats with open sights. I use a piece of 7/16 wafer board for a backstop. The friggin' 177s were shooting through the backstop at 22 yards. I didn't expect that.

I don't really like the small 177 pellet. But its cheap and accurate. I pay $5.50 for them at Academy. I have a new respect for the 177 caliber. I would like to have a real high dollar air rifle but if it came to forking over $400 bucks or more I would just buy a nice CZ 22 or something like that.

I bought this to plink with in the backyard and get a little trigger time at low cost. I have 90 days to return it if it breaks. It seems well made and finished. So far I think it is the best $135 bucks I have parted with in a long time. You might want to look at one before you turn your nose up at it.

Then he ask how it looks and do I think it will last?

The gun looks very good. It is well finished and nicely blued. I don't have any way of knowing how long it will last. I have 90 days to return it to WM. After that it goes back to Beeman.

Beeman is a company with a good rep. Why would they risk that to be able to sell a worthless gun? What could they gain? I have shot around 500 pellets so far with no problem. The accuracy did start to go around 250 pellets. I checked screws and barrel tightness. Then it occured to me to clean the bore, That sucker was black. It think it was mostly the lube oil in the chamber. Anyway a few patches and I am back to 3/4" open sighted groups at 22 yards. I haven't tried the scope yet. Whats the point? If I can shoot this well without it why add the bulk?

The TF78PCP looks pretty cool. I have an AF Condor and love it except for the price and noise. It is louder than standard .22lr rounds. I may look at the TF78PCP, since it is 1/4th the price of a Condor......

It's hard to find a decent air rifle in your price range IME, but the TF's look good.

here is a great one; beleive it or not, it is Daisy.
http://www.daisy.com/shopping/customer/product.php?productid=16145&cat=258&page=1

mentioned from above, it is one of the powerline models.

you can find these under 100 bucks, easy. they are based almost completely
on their Avanti line, which is their hi end target line.

if you need more speed get a model 800 or 1000; they do that in fps speed.

If you don't get one of these, get a gas piston/ram designed air rifle, they are much quieter than spring piston rifles, and much less recoil.
