I'm just curious if anyone has tried to reload shotshells with airsoft pellets to be used as snake/rat shot? Maybe a less destructive option?

Given the way those things bounce around when the kids miss my in house backstop for the same I am not sure I would want to launch them at shotgun velocities.....I have thought of it.....but fortunately lack shotgun shell reloading equipment at the moment.

I'll whip some up and try them this weekend. My guess is that they'll fragment on concrete but we'll see. You don't need a reloader, just cut open a shell and replace the lead shot. Use an over shot card and seal with wax.

I would recommend you start out with a low brass trap load, or light field load.

They are loaded with fast burning powder.

Cutting open a Mag hunting load that uses a big charge of slow burning powder by dumping out 1 1/2 oz of shot, and replacing it with probably less then 1/2 oz of air-soft BB's.

It 'could' result in a fizzled blooper that 'could' leave a wad stuck in the barrel.

Don't temp Mr. Murphy!!
Cause he is always waiting on a chance like that!!

I have tried them with low brass shells I dumped the shot out of, with black powder, and with several different reloads. They don't work well, if you can get the powder to fully ignite (which is difficult), the bbs fly all over and or break apart in the barrel. I have had much better luck with hot glue buck shot, still hard to ignite but when you do find the right load it will keep the stray dogs out of your yard.

Like RC said, small charges of fast powder.

Back in the old days, "barn loads" for small pests like sparrows were handloaded with unpopped popcorn so as not to damage tin roofs...I'd imagine Airsoft pellets might work but as warned, be wary of ricochets. ALWAYS wear safety/shooting glasses when using such loads and make sure everyone present has them on also.

Interesting. Un popped pop corn was suggested for one of the kill payloads on the old "Star Wars" interceptor projects. Part of the idea was that in the vacuum of space the stuff would pop as the carrier opened and cause spread. Apparently a fluffy bit of Pop's Rite at 14,000MPH is a bad thing. Just imagine one of the old maids......wow.

I wonder if one of the control flight wads and a poly filler ( or even corn meal)might help with the in barrel problems with airsoft.

Now I want ballistic gel penetration tests and sheet rock box o truth tests.

Thanx for all the replies, I think I may shift gears and try popcorn. I've never bought the airsoft bb's but I would imagine popcorn will be cheaper and work just as well.

Does popcorn ricochet or just get pulverized?

Rather than using a one piece wad, use an over powder card wad or a PGS or simply cut the gas seal portion off of a standard wad. The extra room for the lighter payload, whether it is Airsoft BB's, pop corn, or maize seed (my old favorite) will partially mitigate the poor powder combustion problem.

yep

Yes, I have done this. I use them to chase bears off the back deck when they come foraging.
I use a light load of Bullseye, a winchester hull and primer, a Winchester wad for 1 1/4 oz loads., roll crimp (or star, they both work)
