I'm going to be getting an AK next week. I've narrowed it down to a Sam7 or an SLR 107. Both come with one 10-rnd magazine. Because I've enjoyed Pmags in my ARs, I ordered 8 AK mags from Midway. With discount...about $11/each. I believe they are first gen. Maybe a day late and a dollar short, but what are the opinions from those who actually own and shoot them? Will they be 100% reliable? I'm asking because, I'm reading some criticism on the web now and am looking for actual testimonials. I can return them if appropriate.

They're reliable, but not as durable as the gen 2's, or as durable as steel or steel-reinforce mags.

Considering the good availability, quality, and inexpensive price of steep AK mags you'll be hard pressed to justify even that expense in the Pmags.

Are there better steel surplus out there? I see Romanian surplus for about $10. Good quality?

Thanks! I'll order a pack tomorrow. So, does anyone see ANY advantage to getting Circle 10 for $46/mag?

"ANY advantage to getting Circle 10 for $46/mag?"

If you're just wanting cost effective reliable mags? No.
If you're collecting? Sure?

They weigh less than steel by a few ounces, which matters if you're carrying more than one or two mags. Also can handle abuse a little better, in my experience. No problems in regular training/range use with either one, though. Just don't use a steel mag as a hammer and expect it not to dent.

That said, Magpul's Gen 2 PMAG is supposed to be more durable than the Circle-10, so I wouldn't bother buying one until the Gen 2's are out and some data is gathered.

I bought a few to try out when they first hit the market. I have only put a few hundred rounds through them but I have had no issues at all. My AK came with a steel and a polymer mag and I think the Pmags appear to be a little better than the one I got when buying the rifle. They don't wobble at all and I haven't had a single malfunction.

I would buy more but I am waiting to pick up some of the gen 2 so I can try them out. Pmag has a great reputation so I relied on that when I bought the Gen1's.

Current AK Pmags will break if dropped. The lug pops right off. Commie surplus is the only way to go. $9 for military quality (durable/reliable) mags cannot be beat...well, except by H&K....

All my pmags wmdont rattle or wiggle. Unlike the metal ones. I use the pmags for range work. And they get beat up pretty good. Never had a problem. I keep checking the feed lips on my pmags. And i do not notice any wear.and they seen alot of rounds

The Pmags are light and as cheap, plus they won't rust if you're shooting corrosive ammo.

They aren't as robust as commie steel magazines. But, when they do go they go obviously, feed lips break off or get cracked, locking lugs shear off, mag bodies broken.

The steel mags can be damaged in ways that aren't obvious, causing intermittent problems that can be hard to track down. That said, I've only needed to scrap one steel mag ever, the body was dented bad enough that the follower was trapped. I wasn't able to flatten the dent out enough to salvage it.

They are crapola compared to the ones coming out soon that have steel reinforced locking lugs and steel reinforcement in the front spine.

A mag in the hand is worth two in the catalog.

"a bird in hand is worth two in the bush," means if you don't have any magazines right now and are waiting for the improved magazine to come out and something happens that you cannot get mags, then you would have been happy with one mag in your hands rather than seeing two overpriced or out of stock mags on a website.

Fun fact; a bird in the hand is actually worth 2.48 birds in the bush, according to Julian Baggini's study on loss aversion.

I'm going to keep the 8 I ordered and get a few more. May not take them out of the package.

IMHO, skip the AK PMAGs and find some surplus Eastern European steel mags. Cheaper and better.

Seriously, there's nothing wrong with AK Pmag Gen1's. For the typical range shooter they will work fine and be reliable.

Circle10's and Surplus Steel mags are for if you need utmost reliability.

I have a mix of all these mags (even Tapco's). None of them has given me any issues. Of course you will want to have the best mags when possible. Overall the Steel mags are the best IMO.

I should be set now. I have 8 Pmags, 14 of Jackal's steel on the way, and 3 Circle 10s coming.

The p-mags are a bit narrower than regular ak mags. They are the only mags that work reliably in my ptr-32. I need to order some more for that reason, but otherwise I like commie surplus.
