Does anyone have any experiences, good or bad, with using the type of scope mount that simply replaces the original receiver cover with one that has the weaver rail and rings?

I am really only interested in your thoughts on this particular type as I have done considerable homework on the other types.

Thanks

The one example of a receiver cover mount on a Mak90 I owned for all of 18 hours made me doubtful you could even stay on paper at 25yds

They're that loose

It also has the factory mounted side plate but I've heard that using those could mount the scope somewhat high and make it a little uncomfortable. Any truth to that?

The dust cover mounts aren't very stable which will give you a wandering zero.

While I can't really speak for the side mount, I can say that a forward mount such as Ultimak is a great option. Rock solid mount that clamps to the barrel which in my case made my particular rifle (WASR-10) feel much more solidly built. If you use a low enough optic, it will allow co-witness of the sights...useful should your battery decide to die on you. Co-witness would allow you to use the sights without taking the optic off. If you buy a high mount yes the scope will be mounted high. If you buy a low mount like the russian BP-02 it will sit touching the dust cover. The UTG quick release mount is a good one. It sits as low as possible while still being able to remove the dust cover and for $40 it is a good choice. A cheek pad will be a good idea for most optic mounting on an AK or any rifle in general to get a proper cheek weld.

Greetings,

This is BAD.

Aa proposed get a froregrip mount. Personally, I use the side mount rails on the receiver. It is easy to put/remove and it keeps the zero.

Thank you

Thanks folks. A lot of really good suggestions. I was not totally convinced that the dust cover mount would be a good choice but, until I asked around and got all of your suggestions I didn't want to leave any stone un-turned. I'm going to go with the foregrip mount. Now I need suggestions on good optics at a reasonable price. Anyone?

Sharkhunter, what scope is that on the AK in the pic?

thats an aimpoint or a clone. a very good and reliable optic. lately many companies have been manufacturing models that are very similar to the one issued by the military and competitive prices. what price range would you be looking at and we can give you further guidance? you can buy the real deal for a few hundred, or a knock-off for around $100 and change

I had one of the reciever cover mounts years ago on a Chinese AK. Really really bad. Moved around quite a bit and never got any decent groups out of it. Was actually hitting better at 100meters with iron sights than with a 9 power scope.

If you want a rear located optic, get a Beryl style rail from DPH Arms.

They are rock solid and return to zero after cleaning, etc.
