I am looking into buying an Ak47 type rifle. I want one with an underfolding stock. I assume that when the magazine is in the mag well the folding stock will clear the mag. If not it sure would be a bad design. Anyone have any opinions on the AK with an underfolding stock? Thanks in advance.

best bet would be your Yugoslavian M70 underfolders. The problem however is that they have since dried up. Last year around this time, they were everywhere and would cost only 400 bucks. Then, by mid-Spring, they were 550. Now, your best bet is to browse gunbroker and bite the bullet on whatever outrageous price you find one for.

Finding your GP-WASR underfolders is now a hassle as well, but those shouldnt be more than 500. I see a fair deal of them at gun shows, but they are not nearly as nice as the Yugos -- not even close.

Honestly, finding an underfolder worth the money is now a thing of the past in my opinion.

Yeah, you can fold the stock on the rifle with the mag inserted. I think you'll find that the AK-100 type sidefolder is more comfortable and practical then the underfolders... though more expensive.

For collecting the underfolders look cool. For shooting they pretty much suck: uncomfortable and they get wobbly. The AK-100 side folder is as solid as the fixed stock and gives up nothing for comfort either. The locking mechanism is pretty darn robust too. BSW

Hello.

That one with an underfolding stock, is exactly the type of AK I used during my millitary service back in Romania in in 1990. I didn't like the connection of the folding stock. you always had freeplay there even with a brand new gun. I remember the really bad results I had first time shooting it.
I was pulling the rifle hard towards me and you could clearly see it pivot from that articulation and ruin your shots. That was one thing i got to hate about that particular type of stock. The connection had too much free play.
On the other hand, during my entire service i never had one jam or misfire.
Regardless of the abuze it got from us grunts, that bloody thing kept shooting.

I for one wouldn't buy one with that underfolding stock.

I have a polish underfolder and it is great. The stock is different. I like it, but not everyone agrees with me. Of course, it does clear the mag. Otherwise, as you mentioned, it would be a horrible design.

The main issue with an underfolder stock is that it is made of metal and your cheek will suffer from the hot metal in the summer and the cold metal in the winter. What I would recommend doing is what I did with the stock. Get a Blackhawk Hydrastorm hydration tube cover. Remove the stitching and cut to fit the legth of both sides of the stock. Sew in a zipper, and zip it on. The neoprene is not only a comfortable cheek rest, it also insulates the stock and keeps it from burning or freezing your cheek.

I have both the Polish and M70 underfolders. Both stocks clear the magazine as seen by this pic. Like expvideo said, the metal stock is a PITA during the winter and summer. I found another fix to tightly wrap paracord on the left side which solves that problem as well.

"Ancient chinese secret", 30's are fine, 40's are for fixed or side folding stocks only.

+1 on the para cord wrap. On my Polish I was able to wrap both sides and the rear plate with no clearance problems whatsoever. Also, I noticed that the Polish stock seems to be more strait back rearward when fully extended. WASR's seem to have a slight cant to them when fully extended. Is this just me or do the folding stocks start out strait back and slowly become canted after loosening up with continued use?

gonna say what kman said
you are limited to 30 round mags with the under folder
side folders can take the 40+ round mags

I have 3 AKs! All are folders. Two underfolders Polish AKMS & a Yugo M70. My other folder is a Arsenal SLR107CR sidefolder.
Some people say UF's are uncomfortable to shoot. I find them more comfortable to shoot than fixed stock ak's. The "buttstock" on the UF's is quite wide, absorbing any recoil nicely. Folded, the Arsenal stock kind of gets in the way of my left hand gripping the handguard. My prefer ed way to hold a UF is to grip the ak w/ my off hand up on the mag. Much more comfortable to use this grip w/ uf's. What the hell I'm I doing using the words "Comfortable" & "AK" in the same sentence??? Anyways I'd look 4 a nice Yugo M70!!

You may be able to find WASR's with Romanian sidefolders cheaper (maybe), and they lock up solidly. You may not consider them to be as nice looking as the underfolders, though.

I had an under folder, but I prefer the fixed butt stock.

I use a 5 position receiver extension tube from Vltor with a SOPMOD butt stock from LMT.
An adjustable LOP, rubber recoil pad and excellent cheek weld are really nice upgrades for the AK.

if you want a good underfolder there are 2 ways to go about it, the best option money wise would be to get a yugo they are awesome right out of the box. and yes the stock will fold around the mag if you are using no more than a 30rd mag.

or you can look into "rifle dynamics", Mr. Jim Fuller owns it, he is a great guy and the Yoda of ak's.

I have both Polish and Yugo underfolders, and also fixed stock AKs. For me, it is easier to get my cheek low enough to see the sights better with the underfolders. Yes there is some wiggle with the stock, but not much, and with the para cord wrap the heat and cold problems are solved. If I were restricted to just one AK it would be a Yugo M70 ab2 underfolder. They are built stronger than any other AK with a heavier receiver, and mine has never failed me.(But then none of my AKs have ever failed me either!) Everybody has thier personal favorites, and no matter which you chose, you will be happy with.:D

Last night I got an underfolder AK. It's Polish with milled reciever. Talked to the dealer [Rapid Fire] on the phone when inquireing about them and he said that he had one Polish underfolder with 30rd. mag. for $750. I asked him to hold it for me and that I would be over Friday [yesterday]. Took a buddy who is pretty knowligable on AK's [he has 3] and he said it's up to me but I would buy it if I were you. So durning the purchase I asked the dealer if he had a sling,a cleaning kit and a bayonet for it. He came back a minute latter and said here ya go but I don't have a sling. He also gave me a hard plastic case for it. So with tax and out the door was [I can hear all the moaning and groaning now from folks] $798.74 Got it home and found out it has a threaded barrel which is a plus. So I guess the inportant thing is that I am content with it. I need to go to the next gun show and buy a sling for it since that is about all that I can afford right now. I never thought of the underfolder stock getting hot/cold and I like the idea of putting para cord on it. Does anyone know anything about the bayonet/sheath? On the bayonet there is a 'hook' on the same side as the seradded edge [oposite side of where the barrel fits into]. Anyone know the purpose of it is? And on the blade there is a rounded hole cut out about 3 inches from the tip of the blade. What's the purpose of this? And on the end/bottom of the sheath there is I guess a wire cutter. Is that what it is? How does it work? Thanks.

Thanks. So what is the little hook on top of the bayonet for near the seraded edge for?

The main issue with an underfolder stock is that it is made of metal and your cheek will suffer from the hot metal in the summer and the cold metal in the winter.

This is why I tell people you must "smile" when you shoot an UF. Seriously,
it works.

Either that or you spend your Winters in the upper midwest followed by a
Summer or two in Iraq. That will toughen your face up, too. You just
won't notice the temp of the metal.

Shoot at least 20 rds thru a 98k followed by an UF and the UF will seem very
comfortable after that.

Or, just fold up the UF and go with the total chicks-dig-it-look.

So there are your four options.

So what is the little hook on top of the bayonet for near the seraded edge for?

Some of the AK bayonets have a strap that runs from the base to that hook.

Hey bredda, how did you secure your paracord on the underfolder? Think that's what I want to do.
