Alec Baldwin: "I didn't pull the trigger.."

I saw the revolver stated to be a Pietta. The Italian makers keep flip flopping around trying to make their guns safe from people who disregard a longstanding but 20th century precaution, so we don't know its lockwork. It seems unlikely that a shoestring operation bought new guns for props and I am holding for conventional SAA internals.

He didn't have to pull the triggger, but he did have the gun in his hand. The gun has no hammer block or transfer bar; hammer only had to be pulled back 1/4" to 3/8" and released to cause the gun to discharge. That's why the oldtimers kept the hammer down on an empty chamber.

I don't know about that. Will the hammer get enough spring load to fire before it engages the quarter cock "safety notch?" That would call for testing, and for court evidence, with the same gun and ammo. It doesn't matter; if he didn't pull the trigger, then he thumbed the hammer just enough. Either way it was his hand and action.

I dug my CAS guns out and laid a caliper alongside the hammers.
Unfortunately not including Pietta or Uberti.
The ASM engaged the quarter cock at .27" of travel, the Colt at .30" of movement.
So now the question is whether a nudge back that far will fire.
Send me a case of primers and I will try it out.

I guess I don’t understand why he would lie, assuming they were filming. I guess I don’t know what they were doing though, so

We’re they filming when the gun fired, how ever that happened?

Well, it was a Pietta.
And they have transfer bar (or whatever it's called ) hammer blocks. At least my Uberti does and I think they basically make guns for Pietta. If I cock my hammer almost to the half cock notch, and then release it, the block prevents the hammer from going all the way forward. The fixed firing pin DOES NOT touch the primer. There is no way that gun went off without a finger on the trigger.

Alec is saying "I didn't pull the trigger, while thinking, I squeezed one off! You see there's a big difference between pulling the trigger and squeezing one off, at least in his mind.

He’s trying to create confusion and obsfucation so the possibility exists that he may not “really” be at fault in the eyes of those, who will most likely be ignorant when it comes to firearms, that may be in a position to judge the situation.

Like a child that stole something, attempting to blame it on someone else. Just to create enough doubt to avoid a punishment.

I read the Pietta identity on a Fox News story. Just trying to be a smart ass.

I'm guessing Baldwin will be paying the cinematographer's family and director many millions of dollars. Also, it is apparent that there is justification for criminal charges for negligent homocide, reckless endangerment and/or manslaughter and possibly others. If he carries this "I didn't pull the trigger" schtick into the courtroom, one could add perjury to the charges.
It's just my humble opinion that he should do a number of years behind bars for this "mistake".
I saw a couple clips of the Stephanopoulos piece. I thought Baldwin appeared to be definitely scared about what he did and was making an all out effort to find a way to place the blame somewhere, anywhere, other than in his lap.
I'd love to see it go to trial and the prosecutor bring in firearms experts to testify that the gun could not go off in his hand unless he pulled the trigger.
