I was given a Lee resizing die kit that comes with ALOX. This doesn't work for BP bullets does it?

When in doubt using natural lubes is a good rule of thumb, but I have heard lots of folks claim to be quite happy with the performance of ALOX with BP.

I've never had any problem with the natural lube so I've never tried anything else.

I've been using Gatofeo's #1 lube, but by hand. The excess I had from lubing wads was poured into SWMBO's soap mold and cut into 6 blocks which I used like a crayon to color in the lube groove. It wasn't a big deal in the beginning, but I'm a little tired of doing it now.

I really don't like the idea of pan lubing as it will fill in the undersized step meant for aligning at loading. I don't care for the idea of lube sitting on the powder for long. It seems the only way around this may be to use a dry wad.

Anyway, I now have the bottle of ALOX that I won't otherwise use.

ALOX... doesn't work for BP bullets does it?
No. It is not soft enough to either handle the escaping BP fouling as things go down
the barrel; nor does it leave the remaining fouling as a soft layer.

[But] for smokeless cartridges, it is superb... amazingly so at high pressures/velocities.

I use Alox for smokeless and it works fine but it definitely doesn't seem ideal for black powder. I like the classic beeswax + fat mixtures.

I tried the Liquid Alox and did not have a good result. A lot of difficult fouling.
On the other hand one of our shooters mixes Liquid Alox with unidentified garage sale candle wax and it works quite well for him.
Makes his guns smell like strawberries tho.

alox

you could use it during resizing, not that much lube remains on the surface.
but do not use in the lube grooves for BP.
It wouldn't hurt to wipe them down with a rag or two either and remove any excess.
But preferably use the Beeswax / lard (tallow) mix. Remember Paraffin is a petroleum distillate also.

This was the response I was given:

"We have not tested it , but I've talked to a lot of black powder
shooters that do."

Certainly doesn't say whether or not it's good or not though... It seems most who have tried it say it's not very good at all.
