i am thinkin of breakin down and buying a savage bolt action. im looking for around 300 bucks or less. havent done any research on them, but im thinkin i'll like em. if you guys hav any suggestions of what is the best for around 200-300 dollars, holler at me. im looking for one to hunt varmints and coyotes with, one that is accurate, and a pretty good round capacity. remember, lookin into savage. thanks

now, are 90 series magazines made to be used in the 93 rifles. i am assuming they are made for em, but wanting to ask an owner if i am correct.

I have owned a savage 93R17 Camo for about 2 years now. I love it! The ammo may be a bit more expensive than .22 Mag, but boy does it shoot fast. It has a 5 round mag and for me that is enough. With only shooting 17 or 20 grain bullets shot placement is definately key. I have taken crows at 200 yards with no problem. The gun is very accurate and will out perform most of the shooters that get behind it. It will routinely print 5 shot one hole groups at 100 yards, and it seems to really like the hornady accu tip/ballistic tip 17 grain ammo. I would try as many different types of ammo as you can get to find out which one your rifle likes the best (I'd do that with any gun).

thanks wolfpack, that is exactly the gun i was thinking of getting. do you know if i could get a bigger magazine? it doesnt really matter because 5 rounds would be enough but i don't like reloading them after every few shots. doesnt really matter though, but THANKS

I have a .17 HMR in a NEF single shot that cost under $100 used. I then spent over $400 on a Leupold 3.5x10 variable scope. IMHO, the .17 doesn't reach it's full potential unless it carries excellent optics. The scope that came with the gun was a $39.95 variable, worth every penny. My wife has the .17 in a CZ American, but it was over $800 with the scope. I know others do it, but I believe the .17 is a little light for coyotes. Sure does a number on ground squirrels though.

I've got the Savage Model 93R17. Black composite stock, stainless bull barrel, no sights.
I put a cheap Millet 3X9 on it. This gun never fails to put a smile on my face. Go bigger on a scope if you get one. It's my only regret with it. Shot placement is paramount for coyotes. Anything smaller, I think CCI TNT ammo is fairly spectacular.

My savage .17 has been perfect. Tiny little groups with the Hornady ammo after I traded the BSA sweet 16 for a zeiss conquest. The trigger is very nice, and I really like the thumb hole stock. So far I have only killed paper, but anxious to crow hunt.

I own a 93R17 FV love it have a cheap Center Point scope on it love the way it shoots.
This is 25 rounds back to back at 100 yds. Hornady 17gr.

the only prob I have with Savage is they tend to like the 20 grainers, and not the 17's, and the 17's have a better trajectory.

I would opt for a Marlin with a rifle basix trigger installed (or better yet, a CZ 452) over a Savage. Savage makes fine guns still and you can't go wrong with one. All 17 hmr's I've seen, regardless of brand shoot so well it doesn't matter.
