Am I th only one who would like a good reasonably priced AR type Bolt gun?

where ya could change out calibers n such fairly cheaply? Then again maybe I am just spoiled by the ability to just throw AR's together so easy n cheap... that work well.

Disconnect the gas block and remove the tube. Turn the gas block around to block the gas port. Now its a bolt gun. I have an upper set up like this.

A couple of companies make a conversion for AR's to make them californica compliant. Will post when I remember their names.

Not what I want... I want a bolt set up- there is one company that makes one but it is not inexpensive. I dont want a semi that is manually operated.... heck even a plain bolt upper for the ar would be nice.... not looking to get around a legal requirement or anything. Maybe I am the only one after all :p

Because there aren't 1000s of chassis bolt rifles out there? Cheap? Savage. Cheaper? Buy an Axis and put it in a MDT chassis. I'm thinking if putting the Axis I paid $29 for in one, or possibly a Boyd's stock.

Possibly. What would be the reason to do that? What does it get you that the conventional AR system doesn't? "Just cuz", is an acceptable answer, but you're probably not going to find a lot of folks who think the same. There isn't any advantage that I can think of.

Sounds like my Armalite AR50s, Heavy 40lbs+, Big 58" OAL, expensive to shoot (about $10 ea at current prices), LOADS of down range terminal ballistics:), Fun to shoot and watch others shoot.
BUT I would love to see someone create a bolt action upper that would pin into my current lowers, new style BCG, keep the ease of changing calibers (easily replaceable bolt and barrel)

Closest thing would probably be a savage axis in a chassis. Can't swap upper in 2 minutes like an AR, but relatively easy to swap barrels and can switch the bolt head from 223, 6.5g, 6.8, 308, or even magnum. I would really like a true turn bolt upper that would fit on an AR15 lower and take AR barrels. Would be a 22.5 degree bolt lift. I think it would be neat and would take advantage of how cheap AR barrels are. Pop the buffer spring out and clip on your bolt action upper. I've been thinking about that for a long time.

I have looked at the Uintah Precision uppers. Not to pricey if you already have a decent lower.

Googled and left wondering how I load the thing.. Through the ejection port? Break it down?
Odd to say the least.

No, your not....id buy one if i could get one affordably. Specifically to swap uppers with two pins.
That said its pretty niche.

I think functionally an Axis in a chassis that the action dosent stick way up from, would be the closest, cheapest, option.
Bolt heads when available are 35-40 bucks and barrels can be had for 200ish. Feel wise if the chassis allows the action to ride low it would feel pretty close.

Over the counter the ruger precision feels alot like an AR, just bigger. As long as you stick with the same cartridge family you can barrel swap those guys pretty easy also.

Load mag, shove it in lol. My buddy was considering getting one as he really likes ARs, ill ask if he ever did.

I can buy/build a nice Semi AR or Bolt gun for the cost of one of those uppers. I sont really have an interest but from what ive read been told they are pretty nice.

I'm a little unclear on the exact animal under discussion here.

There are quite a few straight-pull AR compatible bolt action rifles out there, but I'm getting the sense that that's not it?

You want STANAG compatible magazines or not? Pistol grip? AR-compatible triggers? Which parts of the Stoner/Armalite design are you looking for in a bolt action design?

FWIW, Schmeisser in Germany makes quite a high-end example of the straight-pull breed:

They don't seem to do an accessory upper, but I suppose something like this could be mated to a Fightlite conventional lower.

"Reasonably-priced" wouldn't really enter into this arrangement though.

I can see where one would work well in some situations after reading the posts. I will pass thought. I do have a side charging 22 LR upper and it is pretty nice although I have to remind myself where the charging handle is. Shooting it more would most likely solve that problem or it could leave me confused when I switch back to a regular AR upper. :D

Loonwolf mention an axis as a substitute. Uh, big no in my case. I have owned one axis. Never again will it happen. I am probably a minority of one but if someone offered me one as gift on the condition I had to keep it I would pass. I am becoming more forgetful but I won't forget that axis.

Kinda useless.

AN AR by design, is a gas-operated semi-auto/full auto/burst design.

Barking up the wrong tree in my opinion. There are plenty of decent bolt-actions out there for what you want.

There are plenty of chassis rifles out there that feed from AR magazines, and that is what you want.

Nobody wants a bolt-action Armalite pattern rifle, and for good reason.

Some people obviously are interested. That’s why they are taking orders and have a 2-4 week lead time.

I’ve kicked around wanting to buy a Uintah Precision bolt action AR pattern, the price is always the barrier.

I think it would be great to be able to have a couple of uppers to play around with new calibers as barrels are always so affordable for AR15’s.

The Uintaw does not use AR15 barrels, and that is the reason I don't own one. The design I have in my head for a bolt action AR upper would use standard AR15 barrels and bolts. The bolt would be fixed in place in the actual bolt with a cam pin, but there would be no cam slot in the carrier so when you lift the bolt handle the bolt and carrier lift 22.5 degrees and then pull back and push forward to load. The bolt carrier would just need to be designed with a firing pin block to prevent it firing out of battery.

I don't think the OP necessarily wants a bolt action upper that goes on an AR15 lower, but rather a cheap bolt action of some design that allows you to easily change calibers by quickly changing barrels and bolts. The Blazer R8 does this but not cheaply. A thompson center encore or contender affords this but also not cheap and not a repeater. I recall Thompson Center had a bolt action that had interchangeable barrels but that didn't survive long, and I don't remember what it was called. The CZ 600 Alpha was originally marketed that it was going to have interchangeable barrels, but they decided at the last minute that the public was too stupid to remove and install a barrel.

I do think that it makes the most sense to use an AR10 or AR15 lower for such a project since they are prolific and cheap and the ATF strangely decided the lower is the serialized part on an AR.
