A friend, of a friend, has more disabilities than he deserves. Gulf 1 & 2. I'm being asked if there is such a thing as an ambi AR side charging handle. Anybody know? I was thinking that there might be issues with the integrity of the upper with such a thing. But the amount of knowledge is far less than the amount of rocks in my head.

bear creek has left side charging, right side charging, and dual charging, where it has the rear handle and a R side handle.

Also, an ambi rear handle works fairly well.

I don't know what your friend's disabilities are. For me the Radian Raptor Ambi charging handles work well with my arthritis and fibromyalgia.

An AR with side charging handles out both sides might have some issues with structural integrity, but honestly, I kinda doubt it. There are skeletonized uppers out there, but they don’t have parallel ~4” channels cut on each side nearly bifurcating the upper. I might be compelled to try it in conventional eras, but uppers and carriers are a bit more expensive than normal right now.

But conventional ambi handles can be used on some side charging uppers, which will likely be his best option.

Throwing this out there, with a single-sided (conventional) handle you could tie paracord to the right tab and string it to the left with a small loop to actuate the release and enough extra cordage for him to grab. Sort of a crossbow style that would normally lay on top of the receiver extension.

Cheap and simple, if it works for him. Might need a hole drilled in the release to keep the cord placed correctly.

I keep scratching my head over this post - admittedly, I’m having trouble picturing what disability might be benefitted by ambi side charging... Am I right in assuming it’s a strength issue? Such he’d need both hands to operate the charger? I considered a similar arrangement for my son when he was smaller, so he could clear his own rifle more easily on the bench, but ultimately put off the project long enough that he simply developed the physical size and strength required.

When uppers could be had for $49 and BCG’s for under $100, I wouldn’t hesitate to drill and tap handles into a Carrier and mill slots into an upper to try it out.

Yeah, I gotcha. I'll bring these ideas to these guys. If ya want say howdy as the request a day or so ago came asking what site I was on. Save me from not quoting anybody accurately. Their visiting this post and the comments. Thanks guys.

If your friend just needs slightly easier access, the Radian Raptor is about the easiest conventions ambi charging handle out there. I prefer the all aluminum version and you can opt for the NP3 coating which reduces the friction of charging even further.
