American Hoggers

well we don't hunt with dogs, so i guess ours are less pressured and agitated

Don't hunt them with dogs. Usually the primary boar will charge when you are shooting his sows. I've found them to be very territorial over the years. I can't count the number of times I've been charged. Sows will do it too.

I hunt them in Western Alabama and we see a lot of russian and arkansas mix in our boar. The average hog we see is between 200-350lbs. They don't fear us at all.

its a reality show with lots of drama.the way they hunt them is more fun than just snuffing them with a rifle from 300 yrds.its like coon hunting with dogs which is tons of fun only the quarry is bigger, tastier, meaner and a bigger nuisance!

I live in the Texas Hill Country. Hog city. Once again the TV people go and find the most "colorful" off beat folks they can possibly find and present them to the public as as A) Average Texans B) Average Hunters....nothing could be further from reality.

After the last few notable politicians from there I found the family quite refreshing.

Never had a hog charge me. Usually they get scared when some guy with an attitude of frugality and a sense of humor (like me) waits until he can send 30-06 thunder through at least three with one shot, and they all fall down at once.

"American Hoggers, wow, just wow...I've been hunting and trapping hogs going on 10 years now, I've taken hogs just about every way possible and this show's a joke. Sensationalism at it's finest, I did make it through the first 15 minutes though, right up until they were jerking on the Jeep with the Old Dodge, that ended it for me when the Dodge had to 'strain' to pull it out. I'm out, can't watch it anymore..."

This was my facebook comment last night. The show has been picked apart on Texasboars, it's making a mockery out of what a lot of folks around here do to stick some folding money in our pockets.

As far as hunting them at night, it's perfectly legal, and there are several folks that I deal with that make a pretty good living guiding genIII nightvision suppressed hunts.

I make a few dollars extra from Oct-March trapping them. There are a lot of rules for taking them alive, but give anyone of my associates or myself a few hours and we'd have gotten rid of that 100lbs 'monster man eater' rather quickly. Instead of the week+ the show took to get it(pay attention to the moon in the camera shots)

Also, about charging, I've been charged a total of once in all the hogs I've dealt with.

The only reason I was charged is because I made a bad shot on a hog and approached it, thinking it was dead. We were night hunting with gen 3 and thermal and I couldn't tell if it was still breathing, but it wasn't moving.

I've known more than a couple old hawg hunters who disdained using a gun. Their idea was to run the hog with dogs until caught and put them down with a large knife. My company used to harvest a grove near Fellsmere, Fl. which had such an aggressive hog population that truck drivers that had to go in at night were required to only go in pairs with one armed.

I've never gone hog hunting, but even I have to laugh and change the channel. What hoke! the only interesting thing on that show is the hooters, and even those seem to be over armored...

I don't care if it is fake or not. As long as those two babes are on the show, I will watch every episode.

If you care to go hog hunting contact someone in Mason Texas I know they advertise Guided Hog Hunts. There are people here where I live that trap hogs. They feed them out and then have them processed. There are people that advertise in the paper that they will buy trapped Hogs.

It's real funny how this old thread popped up tonite. lol

I just came back from watching a herd a 20-30 pigs in the neighbors pasture, a mile down my driveway. First i've seen that close to the house. It has been the talk of the house all nite:)

Thread resurection,,,,,,,,

The pigs are mean here in Texas.

I was able to get two a month ago near the Mexico border.

You HAVE to hunt the wind to have any chance of success.

They are eating sheep and calves here like a mountain lion.....

I wouldnt want to be out unarmed, where they are

The farmers hate them

when I saw the thread American hoggers I thought it was about gun owners with 50000 rounds of ammo

Then why are the farmers charging people to remove these pests for them. If they are as bad of a problem people say shouldn't they be paying people to rid them of these pests instead of charging them. Just doesn't make sense to me.

Tennessee's wild hog problem was caused by canned hunts, and people introducing them into areas where they were previously not a problem. So Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has some rules. Last I checked, rules included: Trapped wild hogs cannot leave a property alive. No sports hunting of wild hogs (I believe *native* wild boar is still considered big game for sports hunting though). Landowner, family and tenants can use any legally permitted method of hunting against wild hogs without a permit. With a wildhog permit, they not only can use illegal hunting methods (over bait, with lights at night, etc.) but also a landowner can designate up to ten persons as his hog hunting agents that are not family or tenants. Wild hogs are an epidemic and TWRA regards commercial hunting preserves as one of the sources of the problem. Since these are emergency rules, they may change, and I will recontact TWRA before acting.

True story; my wives' surgeon, for her knee replacement, would go hogging with a bunch of guys and dogs[not for her knee replacement] and catch the hogs alive and sell them. This was in Fort Worth, Texas. The subject of hunting came up when he saw my gander mountain cap. If I was a surgeon and my income depended on my cutting skills I wouldn't want to be wanting to be putting my hands near a hogs' teeth, but I would like to watch.

I've never seen anyone try to bring a hog/pig in alive here in Texas. They are a nuisance animal like coyotes, or wood chucks and gophers to the northern folks.

One fella I know a few miles from where I hunt has a trailer and catches them alive. He chastises me for killing them. He sells them alive in El Campo, I believe. We're in Matagorda county and El Campo I believe is Jackson county or just past it.

I kinda like that show and there must be some incentive to not blast them piggies to hell and be done with it.
The converse is, on that successful alligator/swamp show, they only pop them dead and there's (was?) a new show in Australia where they can only catch their bigger crocs alive.

Many hog hunters and trappers sell live hogs to butchers who export the meat. Some sell live hogs to the so called "hunting ranches".

Yea, I hear you. But then again we hear of these varmints as being varmints needing extermination. Last I checked you pretty much exterminate something that needs exterminating. but I hear you
I guess they'll be there forever if folk just jimmy jive around.

I was traveling from Rocksprings, Tx to Del Rio on 377 a couple of weeks ago at 2130 I literally ran into a seething mass of black completely across the road and 4 deep. Hawgs! the collision killed 4 outright and I euthanized a 5th that had a broken back. They stunk! I couldn't imagine anyone eating them. Before I could assess the situation a 18 wheeler came along and I flagged them down before they got to the kill zone. The truckers duct taped my car lights together, while I removed the hawgs from the road. The pigs were 150-300 lbs. One had been pregnant and had burst open leaving 6- 6 inch long fetuses in the road. It cost me $1000.00 to fix the car. Since I only have liability it came out of my pocket. Yep, pigs are a scourge in Texas.

I have spoken to Farmers. Some are worried about the liability involved of having people shooting around........ Some use it like a business for extra income.....

Texan Scott you are most welcome. I actually wanted to kill some hogs, but I had expected to do it differently. The moment seized me! Ha ha.
