I've always thought it would be helpful to have a list of some calibers from least to most expensive. Some internet searches have pulled up a few things, but I'm not sure how reliable they are. It also pulls up ammo finding sites, but I don't want to spend the time making notes and clicking down a list.

So pre-panic, what would this list be? I imagine .22 lr and 7.62x54r would be at the top.

On a similar note, has the panic created any unusual price hierarchies other than the high price of .223?

577 runs $183.50 for ten rounds
700 NE runs $425.00 for five rounds, or $105.00 EACH!
Regulating one of those in a double gun cost you an additional several thousand dollars from H&H

What is the purpose of rounds like that? Just to be different? I mean, don't they already have guns for elephant hunting?

Well, there's hamburgers, and then there's cheeseburgers and bacon burgers and avocado burgers and green chile cheeseburgers and California burgers and about a thousand different others. What if they had just stopped at hamburgers...?

YEP, you're right! looking at the chart, had a dyslexic moment - thanks for correcting me!

Paraphrasing Lloyd Bridges from Airplane - I picked a bad day to give up thinking!

Make that $85 each - still too damn much

.22 Long Rifle
7.62x54R
.223 Remington
7.62x39mm
9mm Luger
7.62x25mm
5.45x39mm

Pre-madness of course. You could probably throw .38 Special, 9mm Makarov, and some of the other rimfire cartridges in there as well.

I know 54R is here to stay and 7.62x39 is cheap even if it isn't surplus, but I always wonder whether 7.62x25 and 5.45 are worth getting into. If I knew for sure I could always get it cheap like I can 54R, I'd probably already have an AK in 5.45 and a Tokarev.

Aside from rimfire reloading is the great equalizer. Brass is still high for some, I have paid as much as $3 per shell but it beat $8 or $9 for the factory loads.
Your list will vary depending on components and now is a bad time to put a price on any ammo but a lot depends on popularity as well. Surplus ammo will run cheaper than quality hunting ammo will. Bulk pistol in lead will be cheaper than defense rounds.
I'd take a look at some ammo catalog and break it down by personal preference.

Don't forget shotshells (12, 20, 28, .410). Less than $5 for a box of 25 and less if you reload. My parents spent very little by reloading for trap shooting.
