... by the Liberty Science Center, of all places. The LSC is a child-oriented learning center/museum just a stone's throw from the Statue of Liberty, but on the Jersey side of the harbor. It's a popular destination for class trips, family outings, and even birthday parties, I believe.

But when a Manhattan based gun-control advocate complained that one of the books for sale in their gift shop encouraged kids to build handguns (specifically the Binder Beretta 92), the Science Center stood their ground:

Very interesting!

And there is a poll. Currently running 499-305 against selling the book. Light it up.

Just voted. Currently "Yes" to selling the book is up 63.48% to 36.52% against.

Feel like you have to tell the anti-gun folks to try to keep this all in perspective; it's just a book for kids about making toy guns. It's not like it contains secret plans for making weapons of mass destruction from items commonly found around the house.

When I was kid we used to saw off the ends of co2 cartridges and stuff 'em with match heads, install a fuse, and launch them out of a copper pipe. :what:
So when I see books like these, if anything, I think it offers kids a much safer alternative to the destructive devices we used to invent.

Kids like launching projectiles, it's that simple. To deny them that opportunity is to compromise healthy mental development.

I voted in favor od buying the book. I don't recall the spread, but we were ahead by a good margin. My grandmother is in the hospital near the LSC at the moment. When i go visit her this week, I might take a stop in there for the sole purpose of buying a copy to support them.

Voted,man do I hate liberal ******s!
Really? You're going to use this as an opportunity to bash liberals? Let's not make it political.

Yup,you betcha I am,because I can guarantee you that the person on the whiney complaining end of this story sure isn't a Regan republican or Conservative.
Got an issue grab a tissue.

I sent this email just now...

I sent the following to the email address I found for Liberty Science Center ([email protected]).

Dear Sir or Madam-

After the recent article about your museum's sale of the book, "Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction 2: Build a Secret Agent Arsenal", I decided I would like to buy a copy of this book, from your book store.

I did a search at your site and found the following link:

http://shop.lsc.org/a541/mini-weapons-of-mass-destruction-2-build-a-secret-agent-arsenal.html

However, when I clicked on the link I received a page not found error.

Please advise as to how I would be able to purchase the book from your bookstore and have it shipped to me in Ohio, or in lieu of this I would be happy to make a $20 donation to your museum in support of the stand you have taken.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Best,

The world is full of idiots and unfortunately, they have voices. Better remove history class from schools, the kids might learn that our country was founded through the use of guns and that world history was dictated by who had the best weapons/fighting forces...

And since I'm in a posting mood this evening...

I concur that playing the "liberal" card doesn't necessarily advance the 2A agenda - last time this type of comment came up I posted on the site two articles. The first is one that makes a defense of the 2A from a "left wing" or "liberal" perspective (in Rolling Stone yet), and the other is from a "liberal" blog that points out the duplicity of several anti-2A politicians, and I again mention that you shouldn't let the title put you off.

Yup, as I mentioned last time I posted on this sort of thing, I'm still right of center politically but will, from time to time, vote in favor of property tax increases (last time was a fire levy).

Have a great day all.

They have already done that. Read something by Howard Zinn if you want to puke your guts out.

"When I was kid we used to saw off the ends of co2 cartridges and stuff 'em with match heads, install a fuse, and launch them out of a copper pipe."

I used to work with a man whose son did that a few times. The kid decided bigger was better so he got a Co2 fire extin bottle, removed the valve and proceeded to fill it with match heads. All was going smoothly until he decided to tamp the match heads down a bit. He had the bottle between his legs when it EXPLODED. The kid lived but spent a almost a year in the hospital. The house was almost destroyed. I saw him a few years later when he could kinda walk with braces and crutches. Don't know if if he could have kids, I doubt it.

My point is that:
a) Those comments are divisive and don't do the 2A cause any favors, and
b) Political bashing is not allowed on THR. It's a good way to get dinged by the mods.

Edit to add:
I don't need a tissue. Thank you.

What is it about these people? If you don't like it, don't buy it. But they don't want me to be able to make the same decision for myself!

675 to 308 on the poll.

gun aside.
The book is simply a basic engineering tool. Teaches a simple assembly of basic materials into something that functions for another use. That in itself should be encouraged. The ability to assemble everyday materials into something that serves a specific function is at the heart of innovation and invention. To lose that, would be to lose a fundamental cornerstone in the path that made America the greatest country on earth.

Hi all-

I'm pleased to note that the link to this book is now back up (previously I received a "page not found" error), and I purchased this book from Liberty Science Center this afternoon.

Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction 2: Build a Secret Agent Arsenal

The price was OK; the shipping ($10.34) was a bit high IMHO but I believe museums tend to be pricey that way to subsidize operations.

Have a great day all.

Very well said.
