An example for those who don't believe in 7+ round mags or AR15 for home protection

For people who say, "You wouldn't need more than 7 rounds, high capacity magazines, or an AR15 rifle for home protection."

This recent case involves 4 armed suspects attempting to break into a home. Taking on 4 armed suspects by yourself even with an AR15 would leave you at a great disadvantage.

Surveillance captures 4 suspects in West Mt. Airy attempted home invasion

Wednesday, July 15, 2015 05:40PM

WEST MT. AIRY (WPVI) --
Philadelphia police are searching for four armed suspects who were caught on camera in an attempted home invasion in West Mount Airy.

All four armed suspects attempted to gain entry into the home.

I see both sides. On one hand, statistics say you'll probably not have to fire and if you do you'll need only a few rounds.

However,

Statistics also say you're not likely to get into a gunfight. So if you do, the statistics are already skewed.

I've never met anyone who wished for a smaller gun or less ammunition.

He didn't need a gun at all. Looks like his door and locks were sufficient.

Not every problem is a gun problem. And you just witnessed a perfect example of why physical security measures are the most important defensive measure you can have in your home.

True. These guys may have also been deterred because they were in a neighborhood where cops would come quickly.

Someone in the country or a more remote location might have been in more trouble because the bad guys know they'd have more time and also, most people in the country don't have security doors on the outside of their house or bars on their windows. Even more reason to have a rifle or pistol with a larger capacity magazine.

It is a damn shame that in order to be safe from attack by human garbage in this country we should need jail doors and windows on our home. And just as sad that inside all homes should be a capable person armed to thwart such refuse.....most homes would allow the defender but precious few moments to become sufficiently armed to counter this human defication as doors and windows lack the security measures shown here. "Keep yer powder dry" and survive.

I don't see it as a very good example at all. The homeowner defeated his primary security by opening the door.

It's far from being a jail door, that's what big box home stores sell as a security urban screen door. It can be easily pried open with a crowbar.

It wasn't a determined entry with perps resolved to get in. There is very little here to justify the OP's opening title. As for the negative characterization of the perps, ease up. A group of humans from any race could have been involved. Throwing the race card into this isn't High Road.

I agree. The break in attempt was easily defeated by locks on the entry doors which makes a case for why a firearm was not needed by the resident.

In addition given the layout of the entryway and porch a shotgun would be more effective as the porch caused the intruders to be bunched up together.

The video shows them bunched up together against the house after not getting the door open maybe looking through a window. A couple of rounds of shotshells would cause a lot of injuries not just from the shot but also flying glass.

What is not discussed is why that particular residence was chosen or as the late Paul Harvey said..."the rest of the story." I'll bet it has to do with drugs or money the resident owed one of them.

There are countless videos also about on the 'net that show what does typically happen when one armed defender takes on multiple robbers or home-invaders; he opens fire, and the suspects turn tail and run, falling over themselves in their retreat (those still physically able to, at least.)

Still, I'm not about to step down to the VPOTUS' suggestion..

Can't go with the premise here... but then I spent a lot of years on the street as a cop....

If you're unlucky enough to be home when the bad guys come then a strong defense violently executed will end the problem (if you're sharp enough to see it coming). No matter how much fun it is to accumulate arms, ammunition, and equipment - then train for whatever comes... a single properly handled sidearm, shotgun, or rifle is all you're going to need 99.9% of the time.

I seriously doubt that you'll have to put down more than one before the rest (no matter how many...) quickly retreat. Most of what we "know" about this sort of stuff is from popular entertainment -in real life, unless you're in some third world place like (fill in the blanks here, yourself) or on the receiving end of an armed assault (pre-planned and serious as a heart attack) all you'll ever face is one or more less than motivated individuals at your doorstep (and that will happen so rarely that you're much more likely to hear about it than experience it yourself...)

You'll note I said "if you're unlucky enough to be home" and I meant it. I'd like to go through the rest of my life without having to shoot anyone again. If you're ever unfortunate enough to be in an armed confrontation the aftermath won't be pleasant or short lived. To this day I regret the single shot I fired as a cop - and that was many years ago...

@ Lemaymiami

I thank you for your service and FULLY understand it [ 26 years as LEO ].

I too see that IF your home and attacked, what you have at hand on a daily basis AND train with will be THE answer to the problem [ or not ].

I also see a future [ NOT far ahead ] that will be frought with home invasions with multiple attacker.

I for one do NOT want to have limited options as to how many will stand and fight or flee.

My external security is MUCH better than any home in my AO,but if that is breached,or I make a mistake and answer my door [ NOT LIKELY ] then I want to have the BEST response to repel invaders.

I do not open my door EVER without seeing who is there first, and then I might be armed anyway as I go to the door prepared.

i think the big deal with ar15 for HD is that the FMJ bullet can penetrate the concrete exterior wall of your house, while maintaining lethal velocity, whereas buckshot usually cant. that said, my home defense gun is an ar15, but it's loaded with hollow points.

Only in states like NY and NJ will you find people who think 7-10 rounds is enough. Out and about I carry 25 rounds or so. At home I lighten down to 10-12 with a spare nearby.

Funny; I used to think something similar to myself as I'd walk the business strips in my patrol zones at 0-dark-30 rattling doors and checking windows when on the job many years ago. I thought it was indeed ironic that, being a so-called civilized society, that a need for my job even existed...

What in the world are you talking about? There is no mention of race anywhere in this thread. "Human garbage" is not race-specific, it is an accurate description of anyone who perpetrates this type of activity.

Nobody is "throwing the Race Card"...except maybe you.

And why is that?

Pretty dang non-THR behavior on your part. :fire:

No, it will not do that at all, even if one were to be so foolish as to use FMJ's in a defensive weapon

I'm not sure where people come up with these fantasies unless it's from the movies or TV

Not every problem is a gun problem.

We just had houses all around us get hit by a group of teenagers, but we weren't touched. One house was hit twice. I attribute it to the big dog inside and the cameras front and back. I did wonder why my shop didn't get hit but realized an old non-working camera is pointed at it. :)
