I dont know if it has been done before, but I would like to take a 50bmg case neck it down to a .30 and use some sierra matchkings, and see what happens. Would probably be a good 1000 yard caliber. But it seems a bit much powder for that small of a bullet........

Oh well thats my mind just rambling along..

Tom Cruise answered, "Go".

He wagered, "For it".

But I think the gun to fire it would be a bit bulky, if you need a .50 BMG action on it...

As hinted at above, using more powder in a rifle of the same caliber will decrease the life of a barrel. .300 winmag is bad enough as far as barrel life goes in comparison to say a .308 due to being loaded with much more powder. I can only imagine how bad it would be using that much powder per shot in the same caliber.

Also (purely speculation at this point) I'd be worried about blowing the whole thing up. A .50bmg size BOOM plus a smaller hole to push all the gasses out of might (again, I'm no expert, just guessing here) create chamber pressures much higher than seen in a true .50bmg rifle.

I know CZ makes a .300 rifle guaranteed to shoot 1 MOA at 1000 yards, and I would imagine somebody like action express makes something even better.

i have seen a round floating around and it was called the:
loudgoboominearglasplitten (not sure on spelling. dont know if it were an actual cartridge or not.

why not just use the .50 bmg as the.50 bmg and shoot for 2000 yards

I would like to try something different. I have thought about it, and even called shilen, they said they could make me a barrel for about $750, no conture just a straight barrel, it would weigh about 15lbs though. I know that with action scope and everything a gun like this would prolly weigh as much as a .50 but right now its just an idea floating in my mind, See i need to concentrate more on finding someone who will sell me a super sniper 10x or 16x before I go spend the cash I saved on another gun...

Years ago there was a guy in a gun mag who did a .17/44mag just to see if he could. Took about five dies IIRC to neck the case down.

A .338 would be more reasonable than a .30, but either one would still be a little bit ridiculous.

That's just way too much powder pushing a small projectile - I'm not sure what it is that you would gain by doing it...

...the projectile is too small to be much use past 1,000-1,500 yards, unlike a .50BMG that weighs over 600 grains and has enough mass to effective at extremely long ranges, you might as well stick with a .338 lapua.

...as already mentioned, good luck finding a powder that is slow burning enough to take advantage of that large of a case.

...how fast do you expect this thing to go? to achieve the hyper-velocity momentum that the .50BMG casing would provide, you would almost surely exceed safe pressures = kaBOOM!

...also, this project would tie up lots of cash.

How long of a barrel would you need to reach the potential of the powder pushing such a small bullet. You might wind up with the "small arms" version of the German's Paris gun , need a truss system to keep the barrel from bending due to it's weight and length.

Seriously, I think you would need a barrel length that would not be practicle for a shoulder fired arm.

the mental picture I just got from this will make me smile for days:D
