Is anybody going to San Antone?
I was 14, dad and ma had been divorced most of my life. I lived with my father for that time. One night Dad and I were watching the Spurs game against the Lakers. I told him I wanted to join the army like he did and big bro did. I wanted to save some money and get me a knife to take when I would deploy. He went into his tool bag and presented me with a Cold Steel Gunsite Tanto folder. I carried it from 14 - 18 years old. One night during a stupid decision it was taken from me by a state trooper outside Killeen and I never made the attempt to get it back. I had the "it'll be there tomorrow" vibe over and over. I finally came to my senses and when I called to see if they possibly still had it (it had been years...) They said stuff that is not picked up like that gets destroyed. I have no one to blame but myself for not acting sooner, but I still wanted that same kinda knife back. Most examples I saw were pretty pricey, I finally found one that was at a good price point on the eBay and took the plunge. It feels like an old friend already. Dad, I got it back! I bought my grandfather a Buck 105 for Christmas. He was a pioneer deer hunter in our county. There were only a few deer in our area. He passed away a few years later.
About 20 years later, a trackhoe was idling in the front yard of my grandparents house, ready to take down the old house and return the old building site to farmland once again. I reluctantly went through the front door one last time to do a walk-through. Everything of value had been removed months earlier, but for some reason I pulled the highest drawer from the 1950's built-in dresser. There before my eyes was thr Buck 105, and a Swiss Army knife that my aunt had brought back from Switzerland.
I gave the sak to my cousin, I have the 105. It goes with me every year when deer season rolls around.
And so my old friend returned home also. 20171108_092451.jpg

.I purchased a USA made Schrade 250T a couple years ago at the same show as the Barlow above to replace the one I had abused for years as a work knife. In it's early years, it was also my primary hunting knife as well. Haven't used it,but I enjoy just handling it for old times sake. Basically, I have moved away from the Buck 110 type knives in favor of smaller lighter knives in general.

I really like the tanto blade style, particularly the double-sided grind version. I find it to be very useful.

Glad you were able to find one.

Glad to see that you purchased a replacement for old times sake. This past spring at a knife show, I purchased a Case Barlow very similar to the one I used a lot during grade school and high school years.
I literally went to my first gun show yesterday, bought some sort of stockman type knife made by a firm called parker Edwards of Alabama. It was ten bucks I figured I could polish and sharpen it for a gift to some one.

Is that your main deer knife? Looks awesome! Kinda reminds me of the Buck Akuna a bit.

Im glad I found it to. I am a major CS fan. I know they can be over the top and Lynn Thompson sometimes comes across more like Wile E Coyote vs Wise Coyote but what can I say I love the brand and products.

The Evangelist Cowboy

In my younger days I use to have a number of Cold Steel knives, all of them folders with the tanto style blade. They were all extremely sharp right out of the box and did a great job with anything that needed cutting. Ended up losing a couple of them while working outdoors and never got around to replacing them. Then a couple of years back I was looking online at knives and came across the Cold Steel Kobun, very reasonably priced and got it. Well built and sharp as always this new knife took me back all those years ago when I first started buying knives. It was a nice little trip down memory lane!

The Kobun is a very popular knife for them. I used to carry a peace maker as a boot knife but then I realized how hard it would be to get to in a fight. Its now a backup hunting knife.

I lost a Puma Game warden on the uninhabited side of Pyramid lake in Nevada in the late 70s that I loved. It was an early carbon steel one and wrapped with para cord so it would flick open when I put the wrist loop on and tossed it out ! I bought one just like it on e bay about 10 years ago, but no more the neat 2 foot of para cord trick ! I still carry it alot but it is heavy. I have also lost at least two early Spyderco "Police" models since the mid 80s as when clipped into a front pants pocket they don't stay ! I bought one from late 80s on e bay 5 years ago and when clipped into a leather vest they don't fall out ! :)
