Anime Firearms ^_^

I guess I never "got" anime. :scrutiny: Although my band used to play the theme song to Cowboy Bebop, I've never seen the show.

That being said, the last photo contains a Steyr AUG and an HK PDW, not a PS90 and an MP5. The buttstock on that Dragunov looks REALLY uncomfortable, and it appears to be chambered in at least .338 Lapua Mag.

Highschool of the Dead, manga

Springfield Armory M1A1
Ithaca M37

Fairly accurate portrayal of firearms, although their power has been exaggerated somewhat. Only to be expected from a society inexperienced with them....

EDIT: Do I need to put pics up? If so, how?

Yes, the photo does not contain all the weapons I mentioned, however they are the weapons I like that each character uses. The link takes you to the IMFDB which shows what firearm each character uses.

For that matter, the IMFDB also shows what firearms have been used in movies, TV shows, and video games as well.

OOOOOO! Nice. Some of the best jazz style music came from that series. Yoko Kanno wrote most of it and it was performed by The Seatbelts. If you like good jazz and good piano music, look up the Cowboy Bebop OST Set.

You don't have to, but if you want to it would be great to see them.

To add pics, click the yellow button at the top of the message box that looks like a mountain and sun (or moon?). Then follow the instructions it gives you.

The matchlock muskets in InuYasha...Princess Maniloki?Am I even close to spelling that right?Something my son was watching about leper gunsmiths and sword fighting that caught my eye, being a black powder nut.

Gunslinger girl had some good stuff, once you got over the whole, unwanted little girls are now assassins stigma. Bebop had some good stuff too considering how "Futuristic" it was supposed to be. Have to say though, favorite is Spike's 941

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If one of them manages to shoot himself you can fix it with an eraser.

So true. I always thought cartoon ballistics were off anyway. I grew up watching Elmer Fudd and Wile E Coyote and all the rest. Seems like most of the time gunshots just resulted in powder burns.

I have never seen any of this anime stuff although I think I saw part of Akira once and I think that was anime.

another closet Anime fan here :D thanks for starting this thread, OP. The two shows with the greatest accuracy would definitely have to be Gunslinger girls and Black Lagoon. But lots of other shows have good representations of guns. Madlax and El Cazador de la Bruja also have great gun play where the heroine sticks to a certain side-arm (I know Nadie from Cazador rocks an M1911 the entire time).

Gunslinger Girl is probably the only reason I've been coveting a Walter P5C w/ wood grips for so long; I will own one of these before I die:

I was impressed with Ghost in the shell and the trial where they go into a self defense shooting, attack the use of the Mateba,

As for Gunslinger Girl, there was one episode where they are at the range and the accuracy of the ammo boxes was incredible dead ringer on the UMC box, and there was a Hecate sniper rifle.

The accuracy of operation and recoil (not to mention safe weapon handling despite the pictures) was dead on.

Anyone here familiar with a Stechkin? That's another one that was new to me.

It was new to me as well. Here's the wiki link

I would love to get a Walther P5 Compact...sadly, they go for around $1000 NIB on Gunbroker.com ;_; *cry*

Maybe after I get a P-3AT and a Remington Model 700...maybe then I'll be stupid and spend $1000 on one...just maybe...

it's not about them not being real but more about how accurately the author/artists portray them. Black Lagoon definitely is #1 because every weapon fires/sounds/operates exactly like the real thing. Those not in the know might think it's a simple thing to animate a gun in operation but most studios will cut corners on the details to save money/time so the ones that get it right really make the show that much more enjoyable. Characters shooting to slide-lock is rare thing to see, lol.

There was an anime-style sequence in Kill Bill, with the good 'ole Desert Eagle acting as head-amputator.

Also my wife just told me that there are matchlock muskets in InuYasha.

There are, but only in the filler episodes of the anime, not in the official canon of the manga. Speaking of which, I just read the last 4 volumes of the manga today. As much as I half wanted it to end because it had been going for 12 years and half wanted it to keep going because I liked it, I can at least say that this one had an actual ending, which is better than what some of the author's other works had.

It's really sad when a country like Japan has outlawed all firearms except a few in "gun clubs" that can't leave the club facilities and yet all of their cartoon characters sport bigger then life guns...I contribute not to this fake thread....

Japan is not a culture of individualism. They have that in common with most of the rest of the world. America is pretty much alone in our sense of individual rights and the idea of them being backed up by the concept of private firearms ownership, without which they would be nothing more than empty words on paper.

Most countries are either socialist, as in Europe, or third-world kleptocracies as in the former Rhodesia.

Unfortunately we are in great danger of heading towards both of those at some point in our future.

I contribute not to this fake thread

I agree, you did not contribute.

I don't mean to PO anyone, but if you don't like the thread, don't post. If you have something to contribute, great, we all want to read it. If you just don't like anime, or Japan, or the rest of the world, then start a different thread and we can all debate it there.

Please don't contribute posts that say you aren't going to contribute or have no idea...what, are you trying to increase your post count or something? :scrutiny:

This thread has no less relevancy than any of the other THR posts I've seen such as James Bond influencing people's interest in the Walther P99 or PPK. Or Matrix screwups. Or Guns in the Dark Knight. Or No Country for Old Men.

And if you'll read the OP, you will see that the main purpose of the thread is to find out what firearms people like that they've seen in anime. The thread then kinda grew to include firearms people hadn't heard of until seeing a particular anime and getting more info/first hand knowledge about those firearms.

I mean, come on. One of the Ghost in the Shell characters uses Mateba revolver. Now, that is such an interesting and unique pistol design. And something I doubt I would have ever heard of otherwise. Or discover I'm not going to be able to afford any time soon :(

So please, respect people's threads. Thank you all for your considerations.
And no hard feelings or grudges held held on my end :)

I agree with you. I don't think people should post things to this thread that don't contribute. However, any discussion of firearms and entertainment as they relate to Japanese culture is relevant to this thread. I posted what I did about Japan because it's important for us to examine this fact - they are utterly obsessed with guns, yet they are not allowed to own them. They are utterly obsessed with a lot of uniquely American things, like rock music and baseball. The culture of Japan has always struck me as a little child yearning after things that he can't have, just like many elements of upper-class American culture yearn like children after a European aristocracy that they aspire to emulate but can never reach. Noveau-riche American millionaires and billionaires seek to impress the aristocracy of Europe with their money but they'll never understand that anyone from a true aristocratic background that goes back, in some cases, thousands of years, is still going to laugh at them behind their back. And I likewise laugh at Japan and their cartoons, which struggle so mightily to emulate the great gun culture of America but are still the products of a totally, completely disarmed society.
