Went to the range today for the first time with my P-3AT.

First 25 rounds were Winchester 95gr (BEB) Brass Enclosed Case. NO Problems at all.

Next 50 rounds were UMC 95 gr FMJ. First few mags NO Problems, than it started to FTF the 2nd round in the mag, did this for about 3 mags than ok. And had One FTE.

Next 20 rounds were Federal Premium Personal Defense Hydra shock 90 gr JHP. Had FTF on the 2nd mag, than all OK.

I don’t know if the FTF the 2nd rd was cause the gun started to get dirty, limp wristing, which I started to make sure I was securely holding the pistol so I doubted it, or maybe I need to polish the ramp.

Gun was shooting a little low of POA, ~3". I think I need to get used to the sites.

All and All not bad.

That doesn't sound very good to me. I guess I expect too much out of a gun I plan to carry to save my life. That gun sounds like a jam-o-matic and you think it is "not bad"? I am not attacking you but I can't understand why these Kel-Tec guns are given more leeway to be unreliable than other guns. If you bought a Glock and it jammed like the P3-AT, you would send it back and think there was something really wrong. Kel-Tecs seem to be able to get away with making an unreliable gun because they are so easy to carry, people WANT to like them even though they shouldn't.

I am not trying to start a fight, I am seriously trying to figuire out what these Kel-Tec fans are thinking when they have a gun that jams yet they still carry the thing. How can you trust a gun that jams every 20 rounds?

Perhaps your not as knowledgeable as you think you are. I
happen to have a KelTec chambered for 9mm. Does
your vast years of knowledge and experience miss this
little handgun?

I purchased my new Kel-Tec P3AT today at a local gunshow for $219.99. I suppose my P32 will soon be retired once I have a chance to put a couple hundred rounds through the P3AT.

QUESTION:
Kel-Tec lists their P3AT magazines for sale @ $20 ea. I haven't been able to locate any other suppliers with a better price...any suggestions?

For the record -
I hated my Kel-Tec P11 (9mm). It's extremely rare for me to sell any of my guns, but in this case, I made an exception. I love my Kel-Tec Sub9 Rifle...GREAT FUN! I am very fond of my P32; it has served me well almost every day for the past 2 years. My hope/expectation is that my new P3AT will be just as good.

I have a Keltec P-32, and it's never missed a beat. I've never had a problem with it's reliability, neither has anyone else I've known who has owned one. I also owned a Keltec 9mm handgun. I sold it as I disliked the heavy trigger pull, but I never had a problem with reliability, it went bang every time I pulled the trigger.

The P-3AT does seem like it has some bugs that need to be worked out, but so did the P-32 when it first came out. The later production models worked just fine. I'd function test the gun for a few hundred rounds (as I would any new gun), and see if that clears up the problems, many manufacturers recommend doing that anyway.

Keltec generally makes good, inexpensive, reliable guns. I wouldn't worry too much about the criticism, it seems that many people have to trash anything that is different from what they use just to make themselves feel better, especially if it is less expensive and works just as well as what they use. Don't get angry at those people, just pity them.

Here's something I find interesting...

Regarding the Kel-Tec P3AT serial numbers, after the first few thousand, Kel-Tec has changed their numbering system to provide for an "H" as the first S/N character, i.e., mine is "H05xx".

Anyone know the reason for the change?

I feel the need to say that my P-3AT does not work right. Sometimes when I pull the trigger the hammer does not go all the way back before it gets released. Sometimes the hammer does not move back at all. The trigger bar moves back all the way but the hammer doesn't. I'm shipping it back to kel-tec.

I, for one, am very interested in how this unfortunate situation works out for you. Please keep me/us posted.

P3AT

I have one of the first available ones ser. # 10x, and love it. Mine shoots to POA and has gone bang every time i've pulled the trigger.

Add my name to the list of the lucky ones that got a "worker" out of the box

It has been in my pocket since I got it in a JS pocket holster, I am also iimpressed with the way the finish has held up to daily pocketcarry, I wipe it down with breakfree weekly and this has helped really protect the bluing. I will still swap the top end out for hard chrome when available though.

This is my 4th kel-tec and the only one I still have, they all worked for me out of the box, never fluff and buff.

CZ-100,

Thanks for posting the range report on the P3AT. I've been thinking that it would be the ideal gun for my husband, who has really small hands. He has to wear a collared shirt & tie every day so concealment is definitely an issue for whatever he carries.

Couple questions:

1) are the sights the same as on the P-32?

2) have you shot the P-32, and if so, how did the 3AT compare to it?

Thanks,

pax

Pax, aa good friend has both. They both fit in the same holster, so the size is really close. IIRC, the sights are "dot on dot" and not bad at all.

1) Yes they do look the same as the P32

2) Yes I have, I do not own one but I have a friend that does and have shot it. His has been flawless.

The P3AT has a little bigger bang than the P32 but not bad at all. Size is well really NO difference

I have both (just got the P3AT yesterday). They both have the white painted front and rear sights. Although the P3AT is ever-so-slightly larger, they both fit my Uncle Mike's nylon pocket holster (size #1) equally well. I think because I've carried my P32 almost every day for over 2 years, I can tell a difference in size. My calipers show this minute difference between the two guns. For all basic intents and purposes, they are the same size and configuration.

FWIW, the P3AT does NOT have any feature to hold the slide open when the magazine is empty, while the P32 does.

P3AT not having a slide lock bother anyone? When I first heard it did not , I kinda wondered about that. For the intended use I actually thought about finding a P32 used because , well, people would sell the P32 to get the P3AT, and maybe et a good deal. Any thoughts on side by side performance b/t the two? Those that have both will you keep both,or get rid of the P32?

Like pax , thinking of "when you can't carry" deep concealed. P32, P3AT , NAA 22LR, or Mag (probably later) and Jetfire ( .25ACP), the choices. Honest , though I have the P-11, and never a problem, I have not shot a P-32, I have used the other considerations.

I'm going to humbly propose that if it gets to the point where your survival depends on a speed reload of your backup/pocket gun, it's time to chuck it at your foes and appeal for divine intervention. ;)

I've been kinda stoked about the gun since SHOT, but we can't get any of our distributors to send us one. :(

Well, I'd prefer that it did, but since it doesn't, I can deal with it.

I'm more concerned right now that I haven't been able to obtain an extra (spare) magazine...now THAT bothers me a little.
