Just bought it.

1st: What is it? A 500 I assume.

2nd: What would be a good home defense load available at Wal-mart

3rd: Is there an 18in interchangable barrell available for this model? How much?

4th: Would it be ok for deer hunting?

5th: Please tell me I got a good deal and did not get ripped off.

Looks like an older 500, from the wood on it. 18.5" barrels with bead are around most everywhere. I've been meaning to get one of these for my old 500, which would be good for deer with slugs.

Looks like a basic Mossberg 500.

I have a Western Field 550A. Same gun as Mossberg 500.

I put a 18.5" barrel on mine. Be careful, even with a recoil pad, mine kicks pretty good using full power 00 buckshot loads. For HD this gun is hard to beat, short, compact and 5+1 capacity should solve any HD problems in short order.
I use 00 buckshot. Some folks use slightly smaller buckshot to reduce the chance of overpenetration. There are also some law-enforcment buckshot loads that have reduced recoil. Haven't shot slugs out of it yet.
