Went to the outdoor range I use yesterday after work. While there, on the 25 yd pistol/22 rifle range, I had several scary things happen.
First there was a young teen boy who was left alone to shoot a 22 semiauto rifle. He started shooting at his plastic bottle he had set at about ten yards. The wind was blowing towards us, quartering towards me. As he shot the bottle it started moving to his left towards me and cl;oser to the firing line. I finally yelled at him when he was shooting at a 45 degree angle to downrange. I told him to keep his rifle pointed downrange. He did after that.
There was a family, looked and sounded like Paks, there later who were shooting on the rifle range. Two of the older boys (late teens) came to the pistol range and loaded up their small autos. I had a bad feeling about this so I stepped back and watched. Sure enough, they hadn't gone through one mag when the one pointed it down my way and then handed it to the other and he then carelessly pointed it down my way. After they finished the other three rounds I went down and told them they were to keep their firearms pointed down range. They put two more mags downrange then rejoined their group at the rifle range.
After a while the "group" came down, Pa and all. Pa proceeded to load up his 1911 and put two rounds into the 10 yd target while one of the four boys started downrange to post a target. I yelled at him to stop, which he did. Then the boy proceeded on to post the target right in front of the group, with Pa still holding the 1911 on the bench in front of him with his finger on the trigger. I went over there and told them that the guns had to be unloaded while anyone was down range. Then I noticed the trigger finger and I said " I'll bet that the thumb safety isn't even on." Sure enough, Pa lifts it up and turns it over and engages the safety. I should have went and told Harry so he could run them off; but, I didn't. I did leave shortly afterward.
I am so glad to be going to evening watch next quarter. That means I can come out bright and early and avoid these idiots.

You should have pistol whipped the irresponsible father- and then before he could hit the ground, you would do a double jump over the firing line- kick BOTH of the stupid little kids at the same time by doing a split in midair, do a flip back towards the careless father and land on him- disabling his itchy trigger finger for good. Then you should have slapped him for being careless and sent him home crying. Well, you SHOULD have done that, but I guess it's too late now. Glad no one got hurt though.

I used to see that kind of nonsense at one of the outdoor ranges I used to frequent. It's closed now, big surprise. The other one was a no-nonsense kind of place with a patient but firm range officer and set times when you could go downrange. And Heaven help you if you didn't clear your weapon properly. I prefer the latter of course, but I don't go to outdoor ranges much anymore.

KP95DAO, I know that you're attempting to use discretion, and are not trying to be alarmist by hollering to the range management the very first time you see a safety infraction, but after seeing several, why not? It might avert a tragedy.

guys. if someone is screwing up on the range TELL THEM!!!!!! don't jump on them, just give them a "hey! these are the rules for everyones safety!" and if they blow you off. get the RO and have them booted. RO's can't be everywhere all the time, if you don't tell them, they don't know. I've seen a fair number of message on here and TFL about people just walking away from safety violations. we all have to do our bit to make our ranges as a safe as possible. we're looseing them too fast as it is (you don't want to know how much our range insurance went up this year).

Nothing will get that range shut down faster than some idiot getting shot by his own child. That is a tough one for public reaction. I would speak up. I had to address a couple of hot shots once at my range. Politely but clearly. They know when they are being stupid.

Well we have a little better time at our range, since it is a members only. We run the members thru an orientation, and if any violate the rules, they're OUTTA THERE! Sometimes I think it's the best way to have it, keeps the general idiots out of it, and those who have to pay, usually take better care of it.

The range I used to go to was an outdoor range with no supervision. I wouldn't see it all the time but when stupidity reared its ugly head it would make a definite impression.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to LOOK at guns!:uhoh:

There is a country called Pakistan.

But there is no such thing as a "Pak" or "Paki". All the other 'stans are named after the main ethnic tribe in them, but pakistan was named by the British after the FOUR ethnic groups: Pashtuns (pathans, then), Afganis, Kurds and Iranians. P_A_K_I.

I get the impression that guns are a lot like Jet Skis... I'll elaborate.

I used to manage a boat rental in Dallas. Worked there for years and I have seen EVERYTHING possible on, in, or around a boat, including a death and several near-deaths. The guy that owned the place used to say, "Any normal, respected, responsible person can come out here, rent a Jet Ski, and turn into a blithering idiot within seconds."

Being around guns for some people is the same thing. If only there were a pill they could take for that.
