Went to the outdoor range I use yesterday after work. While there, on the 25 yd pistol/22 rifle range, I had several scary things happen.
First there was a young teen boy who was left alone to shoot a 22 semiauto rifle. He started shooting at his plastic bottle he had set at about ten yards. The wind was blowing towards us, quartering towards me. As he shot the bottle it started moving to his left towards me and cl;oser to the firing line. I finally yelled at him when he was shooting at a 45 degree angle to downrange. I told him to keep his rifle pointed downrange. He did after that.
There was a family, looked and sounded like Paks, there later who were shooting on the rifle range. Two of the older boys (late teens) came to the pistol range and loaded up their small autos. I had a bad feeling about this so I stepped back and watched. Sure enough, they hadn't gone through one mag when the one pointed it down my way and then handed it to the other and he then carelessly pointed it down my way. After they finished the other three rounds I went down and told them they were to keep their firearms pointed down range. They put two more mags downrange then rejoined their group at the rifle range.
After a while the "group" came down, Pa and all. Pa proceeded to load up his 1911 and put two rounds into the 10 yd target while one of the four boys started downrange to post a target. I yelled at him to stop, which he did. Then the boy proceeded on to post the target right in front of the group, with Pa still holding the 1911 on the bench in front of him with his finger on the trigger. I went over there and told them that the guns had to be unloaded while anyone was down range. Then I noticed the trigger finger and I said " I'll bet that the thumb safety isn't even on." Sure enough, Pa lifts it up and turns it over and engages the safety. I should have went and told Harry so he could run them off; but, I didn't. I did leave shortly afterward.
I am so glad to be going to evening watch next quarter. That means I can come out bright and early and avoid these idiots.
