Seems to be a rash of dogs shooting their owners this year, this is the 3rd or 4th incident that I've heard about in recent months. Link to story http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/accidents/article1205713.ece Seems they were driving down a rough road to their hunting area when the dog in the back of the truck with a loaded rifle got excited and hit it in a way that caused it to fire. It was a Browning 308 and the owner who was driving took a round to the thigh. I dont hunt anymore but when I did, I had stopped carrying loaded rifles in the vehicle. The reason was, back in 79 when I was young, a buddy of mine and I had gone on a hunting trip with his Dad. We had just gotten out of the vehicle when his son (my friend) went to remove the shotguns from the back, next thing we know is boom, he had just accidentally blown a huge hole in the rear and gas tank of the vehicle, where I had been sitting just a minute earlier. In those older trucks, the gas tank was behind the cab. Even though I was just 18 at the time, my buddy had taught me a valuable lesson in transporting loaded long guns.

Yeah, I never understood keeping loaded guns in vehicles either.

Loaded magazines is one thing, one in the chamber is another.

A few seconds to unload........

I cant imagine laying a loaded gun down, then going sitting in front of it, yet alone having it bounce around in a truck. The dog is being framed. ;)

The Brady Bunch would have us believe that banning guns would stop violent crime. I wonder if they believe that banning dogs would stop gun accidents? One makes as much sense as the other.:scrutiny:

This guy is the Vise President of an Electric Co-op? To add credulousness to the story the rifle and dog were in the cab between the seats. +1 to USMarine.

Unless of course they were in a hostile environment.

Does that mean they have to put the dog down now? I'm sure Animal Control will go easy if he's a first offender.

I tell people that dressing dogs up in silly costumes is the reason that dogs bite people.

These dogs simply see an opportunity & take advantage. Dogs are the ultimate associative learners. It's just a good thing they don't have opposable thumbs or we'd see a lot more of this.

For goodness sake, people! Dogs have fur coats! They don't NEED pilgrim outfits or Santa suits!

STOP THIS MADNESS!

Sounds like the dog is smarter than his owner. I never leave a rifle loaded and NEVER toss a rifle in the back of the truck. Poor dog.

They're just getting revenge for the Soviet's late WWII breeding program (they tried to make Anti-tank dogs... for real)

Yep, but the program was an epic fail. They trained the dogs using Soviet tanks, so when they were set upon the battlefield... In Soviet Russia, pooch screw you!
