I mailed both my C&R ATF application & cheif leo notification in last monday(Jan 3rd).

When I arrived home friday there was a message on my machine from the chief leo's office/secretary.She informed me that while it looked like I was applying for a FFL,I had sent a copy to them by mistake !She then asked if I wanted them to mail it back to me or if I would like to stop in & pick it up!?

I'm gonna wait & see what shows up in the mail this week.

I checked,& my ATF payment was paid friday. :D

I guess you weren't explicit enough in your coverletter? :)

I'd go ahead and give her a call back. No use antagonizing them over something small when you might be wanting to talk to them about an SBR or AOW or silencer or MG down the line...

can you explain this for ignorant folk like myself.. i don't understand what this means

When you get a C&R license you need to send a copy of the application to your cheif law enforcement officer (usually the sherrif). They arent involved in the approval process and you are just sending them a copy for their records. What they do with it is their business (some of them just throw them away). If they want to send it back to you they can. You fullfilled your obligation by sending them a copy.

When I did the paperwork for my C&R I carried a copy down to the Cheif... told him what I was doing and he looked at the paperwork and looked at me with a what the hell is this look. He never said anything other than thanks but just looked puzzeled. To this day I don't know if he ever knew what it was for.

"The ATF requires that I provide you a copy of this form. What you do with it is between you and your custodial staff."

Same kind of situation with me. Took the copy to the S.O. They had no idea what it was, and wasted an hour of my time telling me that they knew all about guns and gun laws and that I was idiot. Finally called the ATF, and they informed the S.O. about what a C&R is. The look on some of those faces was priceless. :D

Hmmmm...

It seems rather simple and would avoid most misunderstandings if the cover letter to the Chief LEO started out with something like:

In accordance with BATFE regulations XXX.XXX regarding the acquisition of a Curios and Relics FFL I am sending you a copy of my application for same.

Tack on what ever BS one might think is necessary and you're home free. The CLEO maybe learns something and the C&R applicant has complied with another BS government regulation.

Werewolf, only would that it were so easy!!!!

These guys would not listen -- they already KNEW everything, don't you know.

The first thing someone needs to do in order to learn something?? Listen. They were not ready to listen. They were ready to beat the stupid serf over the head with their superior knowledge. (A trait that is sadly more and more apparent in law enforcement officers these days).

Too bad (for them) that all they did was display their ignorance, and even more, their pride in their ignorance.

ALWAYS start the cover letter to the chief with:

I am required to send you a copy of this form is required by federal regulations: IT REQUIRES NO ACTION OR RESPONSE ON YOUR PART, NOR DO YOU HAVE TO RETAIN A COPY. Thank you...

Somebody once told me that we were given two ears and one mouth for a reason. I like to use that line occasionally on knowitalls who just won't ****. When done in the presence of others, it always results in one closed knowitall mouth, and lots of sore ribs for everyone else there.
