The pictures aren't great but I figured I'd share my stories for this year.

Got this 11 pointer on the opening day of archery season here in Maine. He was my first deer with a bow! They call him a 12 point around here cuz he's got one nub you could hang a wedding ring off, but I went with the 1 inch rule and call him at 11.

I was about 25 feet up in a stand and had sprayed some Bowunters Set Up and watched it drift directly away from me on the breeze (not normally a good thing). Less than five minutes later this joker was passing by at about 45 yards. When he caught that scent he turned 90 degrees and marched right up to the tree I was in, sniffing the whole way and stopped right below me when he hit the end of the scent line.

This year sure made me a believer in going scent free. If he could smell that stuff, he'd have smelled me. He only ran 32 yards and dropped within sight.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Got the elk in Colorado north of Del Norte. Shot him with my .30-06 at 10 yards in the timber. Again I was really scent free, and had a herd walk right in on me. I lost count at 15 animals. Mostly cows, a couple spikes, and one fork horn in velvet with this bull bringing up the rear. The lead cow spotted me right off but couldn’t tell what I was. You could almost see the confusion in her eyes. “That tree didn’t look like that yesterday.â€

She kept moving closer and closer, sniffing and turning her head. The others got nervous but just kept looking from her to me and back again. I just turned to stone and avoided eye contact. She kept moving in on me, closer and closer until (I SWEAR TO GOD) she sniffed the end of my rifle and then actually licked the gun barrel!!! At this she whistled an alarm call and the whole herd took one jump and then stood there looking at me. I was completely surrounded by cows, but so was the bull. Luckily as I started slowly raising my rifle he took a step that put his head behind a tree and the vitals in the open and I got the shot. Went 35 yards and fell over in sight. He ended up being a 6X6...no Boone and Crockett contender but I was mighty happy.

A GREAT year!

JG,

First of all a whole hearted congratulations is in order WELL DONE!!!!

Secondly I'd just like to ask you for the benifit of all of the hunters on this thread who ask what the best cross canyon 500yd elk gun is. Isn't hunting elk in the dark timber at close range about the biggest rush on the planet?

Why would anyone want to shoot an elk at 500+ yards when you can get close and personal with them like you did in the timber? To me that is THE true elk hunting experience. Popping shots off cross canyon is just shooting.

Once again congrats....

Hey H&H,

I agree completely!

I just moved back here from CO (for reasons that must have seemed good at the time, though lately I think I need my head examined) but I'll return to hunt every year. My buddies like to hunt above treeline, but I'll take the timber every time. Maybe it's because I'm a native New Englander and grew up hunting the woods, but I really prefer to be "up close and personal", scouting an area and setting up an ambush on relatively unpressured animals. It takes a lot more work since I hunt public lands, but being that close to your prey just makes the predator in you come alive!

The farthest I've ever shot something was 125 yards. Not saying I wouldn't take a 300 yard shot at an elk, but it's not what I'm looking for. As for a 450-500 yard shot? Heh heh...like I said, I grew up in New England. The only place you can see that far in front of you is on an Interstate. Too far for me.

Congrats JG!!

I really like to see stories with pics. Threads are almost worthless without pictures to boot. I've got a couple of stories to tell this year too, but don't have film developed yet, so I'll have to wait to post.

I have one question though. What kind of scent removal techniques were you using when you got these?

Hi Newt,

Sorry for the slow response. Basically I just washed my clothes in UV/scent free detergent then stuck them in a scent bag w/a couple cover scent wafers. Washed with scent free soap before going out and sprayed myself down with scent eliminator after getting out of the truck. I believe they were all HS Scents products, but I'm not sure. Got 'em at Wal Mart.

Obviously the best way to control your scent is to use the wind, but that's not always an option. Some people think going scent free is a waste of time, but I figure it certainly can't hurt!
