Another New Frontier............

I had been perusing GunBroker for about three months or more, looking for a Colt New Frontier with 4 3/4" barrel in either .44 Special or .45 Colt caliber. Each time I held high bid until the last minute when I was out bid. Also bid on one and in three placements I never reached the reserve price. And they are very scare in gun shops around here, non-existant almost.

Then I tried the Classifieds on one gun forum. I didn't have the money for outright purchase, but maybe a trade? Well, contacted buyer by Personal Message and in short order we had worked out a handshake deal. To add to my pleasure, he was in a nearby community, so we agreed on a place to meet. We met, and trade was made. And I'm happy man.

Yes, beautiful gun.

Honoring the Kennedy years and Elmer Keith, Colt did itself proud.

I've always felt that Colt took some Keith and mixed his concepts with
Ruger's Blackhawk to produce the New Frontier. Of course, Ruger borrowed
from Keith at the onset of the Blackhawk.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the adj. rear sight is the same as was used
on the Python.

Bob, do you know if the chambers/barrel are sized to the .454 or the .452.

I believe Remington still produces a .454 with flattened tip soft lead bullet
just as existed in the 19th Century. I used a lot of that bullet and it was
clean, no leading, while keeping it down around 800 feet and very, very accurate.

The New Frontier Colt has a heritage that pre-dates Ruger and Keith. The original flat top design was the Colt Flat Top Target model introduced around the beginning of the Twentieth Century. This was a flat topped target model with a dovetailed rear sight and a front sight adjustable for elevation. It was this gun that Keith had modified into his creations, and the basis for the Single Six from Ruger, which was developed into the Blackhawk series.

This is a Uberti copy of the Flat Top Target Colt:





There were a few SAA Flat Tops with extended grips, and also carried over into the Bisley models.

The rear sights furnished on the Officers Model Match, Three Fifty Seven, Trooper, Python, Gold Cup and New Frontier are the Accro adjustable sights, with the Elliason being offered as optional. Current generation of New Frontiers all have the Elliason. All are interchangable, so far as I know.

GOOD thing you did find a COLT NEW FRONTIER 4 3/4" 45, Bob. The wait for the same model and BBL length in 44SPL would have been a LOT longer as Colt NEVER made a New Frontier production model in that particular configuration. Even the one Skeeter had was a madeup NF pistol. I've thought for years about having a 44SPL cylinder fit to my Colt NF 4 3/4" 44-40 but somehow never get a round tuit, even a square tuit, as it shoots beautifully as is.
And so it goes...

Round Tuits are the most common, followed by the square Tuits. The rarest of all though, are the octagon Tuits.

And I'd have bought that 4 3/4" New Frontier if it had been a 10.5mm pinfire!

Capnrik, I have two of the COLT NF 5 1/2" 44SPL's myself and they are indeed deeeelightful pistols. One of mine has the Colt standard Eagle/Pony black stocks and the other has really nice Ivory stocks. Have not EVER been able to figure out if I was supposed to like one or the other the best !
And so it goes...

Very nice Bob! Enjoy! She sure is a beauty. I haven't ventured into the SA world yet, but when I do, I'd like it to be Colt. If it shoots half as nice as it looks, you'll be hitting the bull on every shot.

So many guns that interest me..... And not enough money. Saving for retirement makes it hard.

Bob Wright: I can`t tell You how much I have enjoyed Your post`s and the pictures of Your Single Action Gun Collection. I spent alot of Summers, Weekends, and Holidays growing up in Oklahoma shooting with my Gramp Paw and His old friends when I was young. And I have had a love affair with S/A Guns, because of that I guess, ever since I was a small child. For some reason I choose the, Ruger S/A`s over Colt S/A`s. In Your opion was I wrong, in chooseing, Rugers over Colts. Also my favorite caliber is the 45LC and most all of my Ruger S/A`s are in 45LC. I reload for it and cast my own bullets some of the time. Again Thanks for Your Storys.

I'm keeping an eye out for another six-shooter. Daddy's Little Troublemaker inherited my old Buscadero holster/belt rig when I got my Colt SAA last year. Seems the leather shrunk quite a bit over the years from when I bought it way back about 1980 or so.

Anyway, she's the only one in the family that my old rig fits...and she's taken quite a shining to it, and my Colt.

So I'm keeping an eye out for another SAA style gun. I've been looking at the Uberti Cattleman and the Colt New Frontier. Quite frankly, I'm thinking the Uberti will be sweet enough for her, and easier on my wallet. After all, my kids will all end up with my guns when I die anyway...so she'll probably get my Peacemaker then!

Probably get it in .357, since the old rig was tooled for it in the belt loops. I checked with some other people who did leather work and I haven't found anybody willing to redo the loops for .45 Colt. We'll see, I suppose.
