here is a url to a ny state newspaper that wants to publish
a list of concealed carriers

http://www.northcountrygazette.org/news/2008/02/02/public_safety_and_permits/

there are three email addys at the bottom of the article of people
at the paper to contact...the author, the editor and the publisher

i already dropped them a line and told them it was bad

1 concealed means concealed!
2 you tell the bad guys what we have at home
3. they will also tell the bad guys who DOESNT have these things in their homes

got a very fast reply from ken

here is what he said:

Dear Mr. XXXX
There is no intent or plan to publish the names and towns of pistol
permit owners. That is not true. What we talked about at our newspaper
was obtaining a convicted felon data base and running it through the
pistol permit data base to see if any convicted felons had legal guns
which they are not supposed to have.

Anything else you have heard is not true.
Please see www.poststar.com for a full explanation of this issue.

so....i guess there is something missing somewhere between
the article in the url above and what the editor says

i told him he is probably going to get some emails on this.....

"What we talked about at our newspaper

How can a convicted felon own a legal gun? Doesn't him being a convicted felon make it an illegal gun?

My guess is then, that they would NOT publish a story if they didn't find any matches. Perhaps all the THR New Yorkers (state) could encourage them to publish, regardless of their findings. I sincerely doubt that anyone who knew they were a prohibited person due to a felony conviction would even bother to apply in the first place -- my guess is that not many New York state residents in general apply for permits, though of course, I could be wrong. And that the background check is thorough enough that the applicant would be rejected on those grounds.

But again, it would be interesting to find out if there were some people who slipped by the permit vetting process...

Problem with that it is that reporters don't always get it right...

I had a NYS permit many moons ago, and I have a very common name -
There is another man with the same FN MN LN and DOB as me who is (was) wanted for murder in GA. I can bet that the reporter would not look closely enough to find that there are two different people and my father (with the same name) would get a knock on the door.

Looks to me like the paper is setting the background for info to feed to Bloomberg to use as evidence against any dealer that sold the guns.
