I saw this guy on the news yesterday he had already had a dozen operations and was expected to need 20 more. His wife's thumb was bitten off when she tried to help.

I wonder if Billy and Ollie had the middle name "Wayne"

California chimp attack leaves man in critical condition
CBC News
CALIENTE, CALIF. - Two chimpanzees broke free from their cage at a California animal sanctuary Thursday, chewing off most of a 62-year-old man's face and biting his wife.

The couple, St. James and LaDonna Davis, had been visiting their former pet chimp Moe at the Animal Haven Ranch. Moe had been removed from their Los Angeles home in 1999 for aggressive behaviour.

The couple, who had brought a birthday cake to Moe, were standing outside his cage when two other chimps in an adjoining cage, Buddy and Ollie, attacked.

Sanctuary officials say they don't know how Buddy and Ollie escaped from their cage.

Hospital officials say St. James Davis is in critical condition with massive injuries to his face, arm and leg. His testicles and a foot were severed and he will require extensive surgery to re-attach his nose.

His wife, LaDonna, was bitten on the hand while trying to save her husband.

The son-in-law of the sanctuary owner shot and killed Buddy and Ollie.

Two other female chimps in the cage with them also escaped, but were captured five hours later and returned to the enclosure.

The couple were the owners of Moe. They had no children of their own, and considdered Moe their child. They were there to have a birthday party for Moe and the other two chimps were jelous and escaped the confines of their cage and attacked the couple. The husband fought the chimps off his wife. They in turn concentrated on the husband. Half of his face is gone, hands are useless, foot gone, no private parts, and lost an eye also.

This happened early this year. Less than 45 minutes from my home. The story made national news. The guy is screwed up for life.

why

some people are so...

argh*, i won't even get into it. too many dog threads already (and I've contributed enough to that fire) to start a "chimps are geneticallly predisposed to violence" thread now.

that said, chimps very dangerous animals, much on the order jackals, baboons, hyenas. the name "chimp" makes them sound cute, and everybody hears about how chimps are 99% human in DNA, but anyone who's actually done the reading will know that they are not to be messed around with. if you want a child, adopt a human one.

final thought: WHY THE HECK WILL SOME PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND THAT ANIMALS CAN NEVER BE HUMANS??!! My dog is my partner, but I would never leave him alone with a baby, or let him run around in a park without a leash, or a whole plethora of other stupid idiotic foolish nincompoop things that people always do.

Actually, I'm not sure whether we should expect that animals can be dangerous IN SPITE of the fact that they are similar to humans or BECAUSE they are similar to humans. ;)

That said, animals are animals, and they do not generally do things in the same manner or for the same reasons as humans. The tendency to anthropomorphize is typical, as humans feel more comfortable feeling that they understand an action or situation. So, they label animal behaviors as they would similarly appearing human behaviors, and attach the same emotions and thoughts to them.

Final thought: Having met many, your typical human ain't that bright. :D

I know where these folks live, I drive by there every couple of weeks on unrelated business. The guy used to ALWAYS be on his front lawn in a lawnchair with signs saying "Honk of you love Moe," "Release Moe now" and things like that. Guy must have had one hell of a Farmer's Tan.

I haven't seen him outside in awhile--now I know why. I can't laugh at their misfortune, but I sure can shake my head. Fools.
