Another rifle I have no real use for …

"Needs" and "wants" are so very often confused in gun buying. There's absolutely nothing wrong with getting things you want, and that's what most of us have been doing for a very long time. At one point in my life a single Mossberg 500 12 gauge shotgun was my do-it-all solution for hunting, sport shooting, and home defense. Admittedly, that was many, many years ago. These days I have a much bigger collection, and every gun in the collection serves some slightly different purpose than another. They're mostly "wants" at this point, but you can't take the money with you!

The people who have to have a purpose for everything they buy and the people that talk about how they only care about function and not form are missing out on the spice of life

Okay, I'll admit that I'm a "function over form" guy in almost all aspects of my life. But, I can also find a function for quite a few things ;) As such, though I have many guns, they all serve some function in my mind... even if only in my mind!

You must be bored with that .358 Norma, I have an A-Square Hannibal (modified 1917 action) one with that big butt stock that lets you shoot those 3000 fps 250 grain loads that feel like a normal sporter 30-06 . . I notch up ballistically in flat shooting over a .375 H&H or a .338 Win . I would guess you would have to go .338 Lapua to see a real increase in capability. I was wondering, did you ever really explore the capabilities of the .358 Norma ? I too love the .35 Remington and it is my go to short range deer gun, and I have and had some real big bore cannons to play with but the .358 Norma is almost mystical what it does with premium bullets. Mine actually shoots 300 grain low drag ones well, but dotes on 250 grain spitzers, like a giant varmint rifle with elk sized tatgets !

Gordon,

My standard load for the .358 Norma is the 250gr Speer over 75.5 gr of AA4350. That load just cracks 2700 fps. It’s a fun load for about 10 shots, but then my brain starts complaining about being slammed into my forehead and I go to something lighter.

It’s fun seeing other shooters at the range peeking at my brass, trying to figure out just what the rifle is. I use re-formed .338 Win brass and have to explain what caliber the gun is, because most folks in the lower 48 haven’t heard of the Norma.

I picked up the Venture on Tuesday and sent the barrelled action off to Shaw on Wednesday. It'll probably take a few months to get it back.
If you know anyone who needs a new, unfired TC barrel in .300WSM, let me know. It'll go pretty cheap.
