Another Walmart Tread....

Took a walk to the local wally world over the weekend to find some .22 bricks. When I got there the ammo shelves were pretty cleaned out and I asked the Assisant Manager at the time when they would be restocking.

He told me that since Walmart is no longer selling guns in CA they arent may no longer sell ammo because they made more money on the guns than they did on ammo. I was like reallly......

He proceeded to make claim that CA was making it too hard on Walmart to sell firearms and said that since they no longer sell guns there is no reason to sell ammo and used this comparison, That if you lived in Arionzas desert there is no need to buy swimming trunks or suits. He even went as far as to say that they would not even take orders on ammo and that if I wanted to make an order I could just drive 3 miles down the street to another Walmart.


I left wondering how long this guy would continue to be an assistant manager.

I did however find more .22 ammo at another Walmart while running errands this weekend. This one had everything I needed.

The pulling of guns in CA was not voluntary - they got caught in lots of rules violations and had to pull them. Now, if they're able to stock guns again and choose not to that's a different story. The store nearest me pulled their guns and said it was a management decision, but they still sell ammo. Why they'd do that when they sell lots of guns is beyond me.

Myself, I get tired of Wal-Mart "ethics". They are the only big stores here with no gambling machines, and when you find a CD you want it's usually the edited version, yet you can buy all the ammo and cigarettes you want. I find most of their food to be crap and most of their products to be cheap Chinese junk. Unfortunately the wife loves the place and shops there all the time. Sigh.

In the PRNJ Walmart sells neither guns or ammo. I guess it is just too much trouble. So maybe the same will happen in Kali.

I find it easier to buy in large quantities over the internet anyway.

I recently went to the Wal-Mart in Hamilton , Ohio to get some .22 mag ammo. After several attempts, I finally convinced the clerk that the .22 mag loads were the long ones marked .22. I got the ammo and started to leave the counter. The clerk stopped me and said that I would have to pay for the ammo now, or he would have to walk the ammo to the front of the store for me. Jeez, what idiots! I recently purchased a Marlin MN 25 at the same store. Took about an hour before they could find all the right managers, that weren't on break, to check it out and escort me to the front door.
My oh my,why do I still go there?

Bought a brick of .22 ammo this weekend, went to check out, the exchange went like this:

Clerk (prompted by the register): "Is this for use in a handgun?"

Me: "Uh... no?" (laughing)... "Why would it matter? And how do you know I'm telling the truth?"

Clerk: "I don't know why we have to ask that... we just do."

Clerk says, "Is this for a handgun or rifle?"<--Not what the question asked.

"Submachine gun."

Clerk blinks once. Looks at me. Looks at the register. Looks at me.

I smile and say, "So, that's "No," it's not for a handgun."

She punches "y", and the register says "Is buyer over 18? <y/n>" punches "y."

bought 9mm, 40s&w and 45 acp there yesterday. scans the 9mm and asks is this for a handgun I said yes, scanned the 40 and asked of that was for a handgun said yes, same with the 45. you would think after the first handgun ammo she wouldnt have to ask two times after that. got to remember the submachinegun remark for next time.

At the Walmart that I go to, you pay for the ammo at the sporting goods counter. No hassle's, everyone is friendly.

It's been said a thousand times before: What do you expect? It's not just the sporting goods department. Go to the TV department and ask a question about a TV. You'll get the same made up answers and blank looks.

How much do you really save over getting the ammo from a gun store, anyway? You get what you pay for. If you want a little knowledge, quit bitching and go to a gun store. Same for TVs. If you want a little knowledge, go to an electronics store.

Take it from someone who is intimately knowledgable about Walmart: it ain't going to change. Walmart is the 800 pound gorilla in the retail biz, they do what they want.

I usually live witht hte fact the I know more than the yutz at WW, but, since this was the last weekend to put in for my elk draw I ran in there to fill out my application for the F&G. My firend and I decided to get some ammo. He gets some .32 and I get some .38s. We tell the kid behind the counter that we have other shopping to do so after some grousing he lets us go. We get our other things, he heads over to a regular check out line I try one of the new self checkouts, opps, dont ever do that with ammo. bells, whistles, and alarms like I just won the jackpot had clerks and managers running from all over the store. The manager comes up and looks through my stuff and says you can't buy ammo in the self check out, I replied with "duh, the machine just told me that very loudly" So she taked the box, and rings it up at another till, asks me the same "is this for a pistol or rifle" question, I say both. she asks again, I still reply with both. She begins to look real pissy and asks again, I say "look, out in the truck I have a pistol and a rifle that shoots this, I plan to do so, so if you want an honest answer it will be both" She thinks about it for a second and mumbles somthing about rednecks underher breath and pushes the Y button, and I am on my way. This has got to be one of the stuppidest laws out there. I think ammo is the only thing restricted soley by what it is used for.

BTW, tell your manager AZ has plenty of beach for sunbathing - just no water....Or, you could ask if his analogy is so apt, why Arizonans have more boats per capita than any other state? Idiot. Our Wally World is OK, but the look on the clerks' face was priceless when I asked him yesterday if he had any 7.62x54R....he handed me 7.62x39. Well, he got the 7.62 right....

Dude! Mellow out! Not everything is an argument. Speaking for me, I wasn't complaining, I was laughing!

I shop at Wallyworld all the time. I don't want them to change. Never had bad service. The guys at the Sporting Goods counter are polite and helpful. Every time I slink close, Leland, the old guy who works there most often, automatically tells me whether the WWB .45 is in yet or not. I save a crapload of money on ammo by getting it at Wallyworld vice a gun shop. What gunstore near you sells 100 rounds of new 9mm ammo for less than $11? None around here. Not even close to that price. And how many let you pick up ammo when you're getting the weekly groceries? "Let's see, milk, bread, cheese, 9mm WWB, apples, toilet paper..."

Anytime you check something out that requires an "ID check," whether it's beer/wine, ammo, whatever, the register "screes" and requires a reply (some kind of ID check) from the cashier. If it's handgun ammo, they want you to be 21. If not, then 18. Personally, the difference became moot to me exactly 24 years ago. I was goofing around with the checkout girl, who asked "Handgun or rifle," as if there was nothing else. I wasn't looking for firearms knowledge, or advice, or anything else. It was a humorous 20 second diversion.

Man, some people are really on edge. Live life. Find your "happy place."

Maybe besides asking you what you are using it IN, they will start asking you what you are using it ON. Questions like "will you be shooting people y/n?" or "Will you be shooting paper y/n?"

Our Wal-Mart here is definitely NOT where to go for service. That being said, their gun counter probably has the most competent/interested people of any department in the store, probably because I'm in a rural, gun-friendly area.

For those of you looking to amuse yourselves by confusing a poor minimum wager that's just daydreaming through the day and following the prompts from the cash register, respond to the handgun/rifle question with "both".

Heheheheehe..gotta love Wally World....I made mrsmack get her IL FOID card just so that when she goes to WW once a week or so for the necessities (diaper, wipes, shave cream, toothpaste, milk, blah blah blah) she can pick up my Winchester 9mm Luger 100 round bulk packs, 38 special and 357 magnum ammo. Never had any questions or comments anytime...the register does squeal on the ammo though but it is looking for the FOID card. It's to the point that when I go Rafiki the little indian guy goes right to the ammo cabinet and pulls what I want or politely tells me the 9mm bulk packs are out of stock. Don't buy the 38spl or 357 any more as I am reloading those. I agree with one of the above posts...I hope WW never changes. But what do you expect from someone barely making minimum wage?? mack

When you buy ammo at Walmart, you shouldn't need a lot of info. Just ask to see what they have in a particular size. Buy the one that you want!!! If you need information on ammo, go to your local Gun Shop....

See I tried to lie to them once when I was 20, and it didnt fly! I was getting .40 ammo and I said "rifle", but he wouldnt sell it to me !

Luckily i had a 21 yr old friend there with me so I handed it to him, he paid for it, and I handed him the cash right in front of the cashier and he gave me the bag.

Talk to the store manager and then to their corporate office. I've had trouble with two Walmarts in my area where they tried to interpret local laws incorrectly and when questioned they became quite upset. After a call to the state police for law verififcation and a call to their corporate headquarters, their "policy" changed overnight. Make sure to take names though.

Local store managers and even department heads are fairly uneducated as far as gun laws go and if you run across one with an anti-gun agenda you need to report it. I found that if one Walmart makes up a policy that is incorrect, the other local stores follow suite quickly. Better to take care of it sooner than later......

To all who complain about service at Wal-Mart when buying ammo, here's a good idea which will save you money and heartache: start reloading. Obviously, it wouldn't apply when you need .22, but it will for most everything else.

The biggest problem I've had buying ammo was at the one by Commercial and Rock Island, the clerk didn't have a clue about shotshells, or any other ammo, but he was friendly and willing to learn, so I spent a few minutes explaing gauge, caliber, shot size, etc. to him so he'd be able to better serve the next shooter that came along. I haven't bought any handgun ammo there, so the question hasn't come up.

WM has good prices on puter games and DVDs.
