So, as I have been doing, here is week four update. We had two weeks off for range maintenance at the Olin/Winchester shooting facility. Some really great guys that run that place though, and Olin/Winchester is a great company to allow public use of the facility the way they do, cant say enough great about them.

I had a few firsts this week. The obvious one, especially if you read my other threads, is that I used a red dot in competition for the first time tonite. I was definately a little nervous about it. First, we have to use the winchester ammunition sold at the range(again, they do not charge range feees or league fees, you just buy thier ammo at 14 bucks a box for 38 wadcutter match), so I was not sighted in to the exact ammo that we used. I have a load that I worked up using Missouri Bullets 148dewc over 2.9gr of AA#2 that hits to perfect POI of the match ammo. However, I was only able to sight in at 20 yards instead of 25. Turns out it was no big deal, I was laying them in pretty close. A little left, but not bad, I was able to correct for it, then adjusted after my slow fire before timed fire.

All in all I would say that the red dot was helpful, and it did make a difference on my score. Tonite I beat my average by 24 points, and beat my last score three weeks ago by 17 points. Not too shabby. It should have been more though, and I will explain why, it covers the second first mentioned above.

I had my first malfunction with a revolver. It was my fault, not the guns, but it cost me today, and a decent amount too. I had done a complete strip, clean, and lube on my 686 a week ago. I pulled the side plate and hosed it out, lubed it all. The only thing I didnt scrub was the bore and cylinder, I just ran a snake down them, I dont believe in taking all the fouling out during the season. Now, what I did wrong was in putting it all together I didnt get the tension right on the cylinder release button screw. It backed out on me, and I couldnt get the cylinder to close. I forced it closed after a try, then came the problem. On 20 second timed fire, the second group of five, I fired two shots, and the gun locked up. I knew that it was loose, so I dug into my pocket, got my keys out, and turned the screw a few times, then cocked the gun, it was unlocked. I came up and ripped them out as fast as I could. Two 5's and one non score. The non score hit as the target turned, actually cut am oblong hole.

The range master talked to me afterwards and said that they had seen my malfunction and never saw anyone manage to do something like I did that fast under pressure. He commended me, then told me not to ever do that again, lol.

I hope everyone enjoyed this weeks update as much as I enjoyed shooting it and telling you. Thanks again for being my listening ear!

You mean the cylinder release latch loosened? I'm not seeing how that would tie up your gun or make it hard to close the cylinder. Or did the ejector rod loosened?

FWIW, the fewer times you go into the innards, the better, IMO. It's rarely necessary anyway. I'll clean my gun before a match, but nothing more unless I can shoot it in practice before a match.

Congrats on another good night.

It certainly did. Never saw it coming either, but it sure did it. Made it nearly impossible to close and then tied up completely. It was the only thing that I could think of, and when I tightened it up(it was almost ready to come off) perfect function.

As far as cleaning it out, it needed it bad. It recieved a baptism of dust and debris last week at the range.

It was still a good night though, and thanks for the congrats.
