I was watching TV last night and I saw an ad for Boston Public. They aren't being subtle about their anti gun message. At least twice I heard someone say "This guy is dangerous, he's got guns!" This is one show I'll never watch.

Won't watch the show, but judging from the ads alone, this one school has had as many gun/bomb/drug/sex incidents as approximately every school district east of the Mississippi combined.

Their ads should go something like "On next week's Boston Public, every parent's worst nightmare comes true when the school is shot up by evil gunpeople ... again. And again. And again. Until you learn that guns are evil."

I can't believe that Firefly was canceled, but Boston Public is still on.
But I've been saying that about most of Fox's recent fare.

I've yet to see a TV show or movie about a school or a teacher that was remotely realistic. Even the movies that are based on true stories, like "Stand and Deliver," are so heavily fictionalized that they bear little resemblance to actual events.
A realistic show about a public school wouldn't get much in the way of ratings because so little that is dramatic takes place in a typical school from one day (or year) to the next.

Yikes! Don't get me started on "Stand and Deliver"

Years back, I lived across the street from one of the teachers at that school.

Mr. X was an amazing, passionately dedicated teacher who went all out for his students, well above and beyond the call of duty.

Being a free thinking human being, he did not line up behind that principal's brand of fascism, and suffered greatly for it, both formally and informally.

Bah, I say.

Saw the commercial, they refer (in fear every time) to the jealous husband "having guns" or being an "arms dealer" 4 times in about 20 seconds.

No problem with the teacher having an affair with a married women or anything. Stupid show.

Cancel Firefly and replace it with Fastlane? Fox is on my poopy list...

I'm sorry, but these laments for the demise of Firefly turn my stomach.

The show was a gawdawful sci-fi show. At the same time it managed to be a really bad western. The weapons and plots on it were ridiculously contrived and stupid. Even the faux-Confederate, anti-government patina of the background environment wasn't impressive. (Aside from secret experiments on female geniuses and being hard on smugglers, the spooky feds were no Darth Vader. Heck, they were more like a badly dressed Coast Guard).

The only thing that show had going for it was the lead and his character Mal. Even he was sort of a Kirk knockoff, but he was the most strongly drawn character on the show, which isn't saying much.

Let's not memorialize Firefly as the good television show that it was not in reality. At least Fastlane is shamelessly idiotic and false, which seems to trump earnest but poorly done genre fusion.

Other than Discovery Channel back in the day when all there was were strike fighters blowing things up and animals with pointy teeth killing things, the only thing worth watching on TV is the Simpsons and King of the Hill.

You mean Jeri Ryan? Surely you haven't been living in a cave and knew she played Seven of Nine of Star Trek: Voyager, right? :neener:

Boston Public? I didn't think anyone really watches that show.
Besides the promo's has anyone actually watched the show?

The show wasn't that bad. Dude cheated on his wife and he was nervous because he sold firearm equipment to law enforcement.
I'd be nervous, too :).

My wife watches it, but she wasn't home tonight so I didn't see it.

As mentioned above, any school as horrible as that one would be shut down by the state, fumigated, the building torn apart brick by brick, the bricks pulverized, the metal melted down, the rest burned. The entire smoking mess would then be plowed under and the earth salted. The disgusting thing about the show is the way they hold up the drooling pedophiles, idiots, racists, degenerates and martinets on the staff as some sort of heroes. These people have sex with their students, assault their students, assault each other, have sex with each other, have sex with parents, assault parents, tie their children up in their basements, cut off each others' hands, and at the end of the day it's OK because they put on a brave face and stare at the wall as if in deep contemplation of how much they love those kids. It's more than OK--you should look up to them. Admire them. We all should.
:banghead:

the only good episode of boston public was in the first season when one of the teachers shot a gun loaded with blanks to scare his students. and then all the bad-boy students piddled themselves and cried to their mommys and daddys because the scary man with a gun made them realize how empty their lives were.

I used to watch Boston Public. A couple seasons ago, one of the teachers got a gun for protection....Although she got it rather quickly, didn't have to jump through any sort of hoops.

Anyway, my biggest pet peeve about that show: WHAT Boston school has no students, teachers, or administrators with a BOston accent??

I'm a teacher. No way I could get away with 1/10000000000000th what they do on that show. I saw it twice and couldn't stand it any more.
Firefly was a great show. Unlike Boston Public and most people wandering around bleating out there, Firefly didn't take itself too seriously. It had actual writing, humor, and guns. What's not to like?

Why I liked Firefly, good acting, great dialog, interesting characters, and a very pragmatic look at self defense (for TV). Most importantly it wasn't namby pamby wuss sci-fi.
