If you are interested in the 1911, you owe it to yourself to check out
http://forum.m1911.org/
The site is dedicated to the M1911, although there is a single subforum for non-1911 pistols, as well as a subforum for the Hi-Power. This isn't a matter of being "gun snobbish," it's a matter of pragmatism. It's a forum for discussing the 1911 ... it isn't a general firearms forum.
What may be unique about it is that, in addition to some basic and common-sense rules for how the members should behave, John (the owner of the forum) has also established rules to govern the moderators. You will not find moderators ganging up on forum participants on that site.
Been thinking about getting a full sized 1911. Are there double stacked "normal capacity" or other large capacity magazines available?
I'm curious about the sizes 1911's come in because I almost bought an "officers model" once.
As noted, originally there was just one -- the M1911. 5" barrel, single stack, single action, 7-round magazine.
The Colt Commander uses the same size grip and the same 7-round magazines, but a shorter slide with a 4-1/4" barrel. Many of the Commander-size clones are using a 4" barrel (Springfield and Armscor/RIA come to mind).
The Officers (later called the Compact) uses a slightly shorter grip frame and a 6-round magazine, with a 3-1/2" barrel.
No double stack magazine option for a true 1911 -- the frame just won't accept more width.
Para Ordnance offers equivalents to all of the above in double stack: P14.45 is the full-size, the P13.45 is a Commander-size with a 4-1/4" barrel, and the P12.45 is an Officer size with a 3-1/2" barrel. Para's compact P10.45 (now called the Warthog) has a 3" barrel and an even shorter grip frame than an Officers. The Colt parallel in single stack would be the Defender.
Then there are some specialty shops that offer long-slide versions with 6" barrels.
