If anyone here has a FFL and uses his/her home as the main office, I'd be anxious to hear your take on this.

I'd asked a guy in the zoning department in Decatur if having an FFL and an office in a residential area was allowed. He said he didn't know of any local laws prohibiting it, but thought there was something in state law.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The bottom line in acquiring an FFL is that it must be legal for you to operate a business that deals in firearms from the location you put on the application. Of course I can't tell you what the laws are in your jurisdiction, but you need to check at the city and county level.

The BATFE has provisions that make it mandatory that an FFL has his/her
business open tp the public a certain number of hours a day/week. I can
not remember the exact wording; but believe me, its included in their own
language for each application~! :uhoh: ;)

To have an FFL today you are required to operate a business meaning you must be able to maintain operating hours. The location must be secured with an alarm system and safes that meet certain standards and open to the public. You must adhere to Federal,State and local laws check with all of them before you decide to apply for a FFL
It is not as easy as you may think. Also check with your home owners ins before you open a business out of your home most will not allow it

Thanks for the replies. I'm aware of the points you've all made. I was just wondering if anyone was aware of some peculiarity in AL state law about selling firearms from a home business.

If you can get a local "business license", and a be set up with the state to collect sales taxes, you should be good to go. You shouldn't be able to get either if you can't operate your business from your location. That is all the BATFE agent that does your interview will be interested in (or at least that was the case in my case a few months ago.)

BATFE mentioned nothing about an "alarm system" ... just that you must be able to "secure" the firearms from those not authorized to have access to them. In my case that -is- a safe ... but he didn't ask to see that either.

You do have to have regular "office hours", but there isn't anything that says you have to advertise them, or your location, to the public. My intention is to do internet sales, I could go years without actually seeing a customer.
