Any bolt actions that can handle 5.56mm surplus?

Ill probably get hammered for this post but.. I shoot milsurp 5.56 in my Savage 110 .223 Never had a problem, accuracy is a little over 1 moa, hence why I don't shoot much of it

And kids, only shoot .223 in .223 chambers
5.56 and .223 in 5.56 chambers.

Why?

If you want to sling cheap lead get a surplus russian rifle. However, if you want an accurate tack driver, shoot only .223 from your bolt action. Military surplus ammo is not match grade.

The September issue of S.W.A.T. magazine had an excellent article about the comparison of civilian and military cartridges and chambers.

The easiest answer--and one of low cost--is to take a civilian .223 bolt-action and have the chamber reamed to 5.56 dimension. Per the article, accuracy was unaffected.

I always courted this idea, problem is, many smiths dont have the dies to ream the chamber (Ive looked around to a couple). There's got to be someone out there that can do this...

The neat thing is that you could use an AR mag as a feeding device (mount it to your belt and flick rounds out) :D

I have been shooting GI ammo in a Remington 700 Varmit special since 1971. I actually bought the rifle for that purpose while I was a young AF Officer. The gunsmith/dealer that sold it to me never thought it would be a problem and it never has.

I'd be interested in someone taking some milsurp and stretching the OAL .020in off the lands and see how the accuracy is.

I shoot 5.56 Mil in my Rem 7 SS- no signs of undue pressure, etc., easy extraction, reasonable accuracy for the Mil stuff.

Still thinking I should have the chamber reamed, though...

In my Savage 24's, shooting 5.56 is a definite problem- caused the action to pop open in 2 different 223/12ga guns. And NEF says definitely NO in the 223 HandiGun.

I'm not sure what the folks at CZ have to say about this, but the one box of the stuff I ran through my CZ-527 didn't blow anything up, or even threaten to. However, it wasn't that great a deal, the accuracy was underwhelming, and reading miscellaneous stuff on the topic made me twitchy enough to decide it wasn't worth it.

(This same 527, somewhat perversely, seems to like the cheap S&B hardball. A lot. As in distinctly sub-MOA.)

Years ago, shot more than a few (couple hundred at least) 5.56 rounds through a .223 Savage 340. (naivete) Zero issues..(other than breaking my first decapping pin)Knowing what I know now,I can't say that I'd have done that. Why wouldn't I ??? Life sure was simpler back then.

When I first bought my Savage in .223 back in the 90s, I bought surplus ammo for it, Later I started to reload and did reload to an OAL that was a couple thousands off the Ogive. Accuraccy was always subMOA from the bench at 100 yards. :)
