I'm looking to get a compensator/muzzle brake for a 5.56 that I want to start having fun with in 3-Gun type competition. My primary concern is for a compensator to get me back on target faster (or never really leaving it) while shooting rapidly rather than a muzzle brake to reduce felt recoil.

I've read many reviews and reports on those from Surefire, AKConcepts DNTC/PWS FSC, D&L Sports, Holland QD, JP Cooley, Benny Hill Rolling Thunder, SJC Titan, Badger Ordnance Thruster, TTi Eliminator, Miculek, etc.

What I really want is a compensator that won't direct the blast to guys shooting next to me on the line on any other shooting day. Any experience or knowledge if any of these, or others, are shooter AND buddy blast-friendly compensators? Thanks.

hehehe

i have a FAL with a compensator it feels like a grenade going off.

well, maybe not quite, but if you have never felt a grenade go off, you might think so...

if you are using it for competition this might actually HELP you win. it will demoralize the poor AR-fans shooting on either side of you. put it on a G3-style rifle and you can also distract everyone 30 feet to your right, thanks to your shell ejection.

Sorry, but by design any compensator that maintains accuracy will also create blast, the more the compensation the more the blast

Search google for "quiet muzzle brake" there are a couple out there that claim to be quieter.

Another option is to buy a suppressor, they also reduce felt recoil (very expensive, though).

Buy a Maculek and mount it vertically. As long as you're not shooting prone you should make your neighbors happy.

Okay, so it looks like most of you think I'm always going to get backblast. I was hoping some compensators would be directing the blast more perpendicularly to the rifle and not so much rearward. Anyone with firsthand experience? I'll check up on the Noveske Pig, I've seen it before, and see if it has any compensating abilities in addition to flash hiding.

Levang linear compensator

Just saw this in the Brownells catalog it vents forward and as in the title line it is called " Levang linear compensator " and at $ 39.95 it won't break the bank.
Hope this works out for you , good luck and God Speed

Have read various good reviews of the Levang "linear compensator" for exactly your use, but have no personal experience.

A sound suppressor would be terrific if it's in your budget and regulatory-form-filing tolerance.

I can tell you from personal experience that effective conventional brakes, such as the Armalite brake, are borderline painful to either side from a 16" 5.56 and a 14.5" .308. The latter one (permanently mounted brake to make it a legal 16"+) was almost incredible as to the amount of blast.

I can also tell you that if you're used to shooting guns with flash suppressors, a gun with a plain muzzle will have noticeably less noise and blast for the shooter than the same gun with the FS.
