Hello friends of THR, a good friend of mine is on the market for a DA/SA single stack subcompact 9mm pistol. I've told him I don't seem to remember anything like that. Do you know if a pistol like that has ever been produced? Thanks.

I don’t know where the cutoff is between compact and subcompact. Smith and Wesson produced several third generation models with DA/SA and single stack magazines. The 3913 was one of several. Sig made the P239. Springfield made the XD-E. There are probably others.

All of these have been discontinued.

Is the requirement for a DA/SA a hard one? There are a number of good striker-fired single-stack 9mm's on the market...
Yes, he wants a DA/SA but I don't think it will be easy. I think he will finally have to shift to a striker fired subcompact and, as you said, there are alot of good choices.

S&W CS9 was a true subcompact, built on the 3913 model and a wonderful little pistol. Another one is Astra A75 - while not a true "subcompact" it was close enough. Walther P5 is another forgotten small wonder nine... But I don't think that any guns of recent manufacture will meet that criteria, except if he is willing to settle down on 9x17.
P.S. Do you still have the 9x19 ban for civilian use as it will narrow down the choices to what was/is being imported in Italy?

No, no more 9x19 ban since February 1st 2022, if I remember well. Now I hope that 9x21 IMI will be still in mass production for many many years and at fair price because I fear that they will abandon it in favour of 9x19 just like they did with 7,65 Parabellum which is become a hard to find and expensive cartridge despite a large number of pistols sold here in Italy.

@5-SHOTS– It might be easier if you give an example of your definition of subcompact (even if it’s not the DA/SA single stack you’re looking for) — that can mean different things to different people. Much easier to provide feedback if we know the “target” in terms of size.

For me (and for my friend) a subcompact single stack pistol is of the size of a Glock 43. Of all the pistols suggested, probably the Springfield Armory XD-E is the only one that meets all the requirements but it's discontinued and never imported in Italy.
Maybe I better call them microcompacts?

Please don’t - the term microcompact is even less well defined!!

The G43 reference is very helpful. With that in mind, I think there are several guns that come close. The HK P30SK and Sig P224 are almost identical in size to a G43. They aren’t single stack, though. (I carry a P30SK daily).

Here’s the comparison:

I would think the H&K would be easy to get in Italy…

Star produced the DA/SA, single-stack, polymer-framed Ultrastar for a few years before the company closed in 1997.

Are there any 9x21mm pistols that would match in Italy now, for which a new barrel in 9x19mm would fix the problem?
At the moment no. 9x19 barrels are available only for the most popular pistols like Beretta 98, Glock, Walther P99, SIG P226 and very few others.

I've told him more than one time that a pistol of the size of the Glock 26 would be a better choice for shootability, capacity, range time, sturdiness. So, yes, a pistol like a HK P30SK would be perfect in my opinion. It is actually not imported in Italy in 9mm (only the .40S&W available) but I remember that the HK P2000SK was imported in 9x21 caliber so it can be found used, same as the Beretta Px4 Subcompact.
In my opinion a 9x19 Taurus G3C could be a viable option because of its second strike capability and manual safety.

Thank you. I've checked and the Star Ultrastar was imported in the nineties and it can be found used even if they are all in 9x21 caliber.

I've checked the pistols suggested by Mizar (Astra A75, S&W CS9 and 3913 and I can't find a single 9x21 one so I think they weren't imported).
Other options like the Ruger LC9 or similar pistols are out because they don't have a true DA (if the pistol goes click, the trigger is dead).

The P239 would be an outstanding option, available used in 9x21. The 3913 I think was never imported, same of the XD-E.

Yeah the XD-E was barely sold here before they pulled the plug. Wouldn't be surprised if none made it to Italy. It's about the closest thing I can think of to your request though. Sub-compact today means a little different than it did before the micro-9mm/P365 craze.
