Any federal fusion fans out there?

My grandfather left me a box of federal fusion 130 grain .270win ammo and from what I've been able to read it is a bonded bullet intended primarily for deer hunting. I have also read it is a relatively consistent cartridge in a bunch of rifles including both of my .270s. Is there anyone out there a fan of the ammo and what makes it a favorite?

I watched my buddy pole axe a mule deer with his .308 and fusion rounds. Seems like a good bullet and bonded is the way to go for hunting rounds.

I like it because it usually groups good in my rifles and performs well on the game. It's usually readily available too which is another plus to me

I can't say that I have bought or used much in the way of factory ammo in the last decade or so, but FF is the exception. I have had cause to use it in 30-06 and 308 Win and found it to be very accurate well made ammunition at a reasonable price. It is good value for money ammunition.

Have not connected with them yet, but they group better out of my 7600 better than any other round I have run through it. I've tried the .270 in both 130 and 150 grain flavors.

Good stuff. Quoting myself from a previous thread:

I used 62gr Federal Fusion MSR to take my deer @ 125yds this last year. Hit it in the heart / lungs. It jumped in the air and landed dead right there.

Check out that expansion in ballistic gel:

The first 2 deer that I shot with my 243 were with fusions. Both were DRT. I bought a couple of boxes for the brass when I bought a 338 Federal. The box stated that it was a 200 gr bullet at 2700 fps. After loading several ladder loads I decided to chrono them. All loads were close to the velocities stated in the loading manuals, but the max loads were running 2600fps. Just for kicks and giggles I shot a few of the factory loads through the chrono. They were a solid 50 fps faster than what was listed averaging 2750fps. The only other factory ammo that I have chrono'ed that was even close to what was proclaimed was Weatherby ammo. Most brands run 100-150fps less.

A little back story first...I've got a Browning A Bolt Stalker in a 7 mag that loves Winchester Supreme ammo. When I bought my 7-08, it was also an A Bolt, and I wanted it to like Supremes so badly.....Tried a BUNCH of different ammo, and I mean like 6 or 7 different brands and loadings, never tried the Fusion. Had some sort of ...thing…. I guess. On the third trip to the gun shop, nearly convinced I had a 4 inch rifle, the guy I'd been working with checked and remounted the scope one more time, and gave me a box of Fusion to try...I cleaned it up again and went to the range. I've still got the target. 4 touching on 100 yds.
Went back to the gunshop with the target, and bought everything on the shelf with that lot number. Everything I've shot has been DRT except for one. Hit him solid, and he took off like he was fired from a cannon. Went to the spot I shot him and looked in the direction he left. Saw his rear in the air, head underneath his body. he was dead and hadn't figured it out yet.

I took a feral hog with 25-06 Remington 120 grain Fusion that was bang-flop with no kicking or any other movement after the shot. Plenty accurate and couldn't ask for better terminal performance. No recovered bullet.

Federal fusion ammo in 7mm-08 is responsible for the smallest centerfire group Ive ever shot with factory ammo. Lost the target when we had our house fire, but it was bragging rights at 1.2" at 300 yards. Did it through all 300 rounds I bought with the rifle. Very impressed. I shot some (like a couple boxes) in various cartridges since then, all have been very accurate, but never shot game with them.

I prefer a bonded bullet. Took my blackbuck and Corsican last year with them out of the Dan Wesson .44Mag. Haven't tried them in rifles yet but have 7.62x39 and 6.5Grendel to try out.

I've gotten splendid accuracy with the 150-grainers out of my Featherweight in .30-06. Only bought a bunch because it was available a my local Sportsman's Warehouse while my usual brand wasn't on the shelf.

Haven't taken a deer with it yet, but we'll see. I may become a fan.

I would hazzard it was more likely a scope issue than an ammo one. I've seen wide dispersion in factory vs handload vs surplus. Even at that with fresh commercial hunting rounds of similar weight would be very surprised to see multiple manufacturers with consistently poor results and another with excellent. There is usually enough QC between multiple boxes that results won't have super amount of divergence. If you still have any of the old rounds I'd give those a quick test next time out. Very likley to end up close to your Fusion performance.

,

I thought the same thing myself at the time, and after shooting the fusion target mentioned, tried some of the other ammo brands I purchased previously. Some just as crappy as before, some less crappy, but nothing in that gun compared to the Fusion. Dunno, but I’m gonna stick with the Fusion for that gun.

I use the 225 gr Fusion in my .338 Win Mag for elk here in CO. It is accurate, available (Sportsman's/Cabela's, maybe not Walmart), cost effective (at least before the current situation), and I have no concerns about terminal performance. I might prefer it to be 250 gr, but that's just my heavy for caliber preference for most expanding rifle projectiles.

I like the fusion ammo very much and it’s been very accurate. I picked up a new Remington 700 Mountain rifle in 6.5 creedmoor this morning. First group at 100 yards with Fusion 140gr after bore sighting it and I was impressed View attachment 946811
What a great group! That is the stuff most rifle shooters dream of! I shoot Fusion in my Ruger 25-06 and get 1" groups at 100 yards, which, for me, is amazing accuracy.

I like the Federal Fusion MSR line. The MSR stands for Modern Sporting Rifle, and as the name implies, this ammo is designed for use in semi-automatic rifles. It has harder primers for use with free floating firing pins, and is loaded to achieve safe port pressures and best velocities from 16 to 20 inch barrels. It usually chronos at or near what the box says, and is usually pretty accurate as well. I have used both the 62 gr 5.56 and the 150 gr .308 Win load, and have heard good things about the 7.62x39 loading as well. Back before the ammo scare, it was not too expensive. I bought a couple hundred rounds of it for hunting and defense. Good stuff.
