All,
I need to go to Newport News, Va for work for two weeks or more in Jan. Can anyone recomend some good gunshops to visit, maybe a great range as I will be bringing along something to play with, any gun shows in the area the first few weekends?

What does one need to see while in the tidewater region.

The closest range is the Marksman, a small store in NN, they have a pistol range. Bass Pro Shop is in nearby Hampton. There are a couple more local gun stores. Green Top is in Richmond, about 80 miles away. Worth the trip.

There is a gun show at the Hampton Convention Center on Jan 23-24.

If you like history, the War Mermorial museum is in NN and the Battleship Wisconson is in Norfolk.

There's a Pawn Shop on VA Beach Boulevard close to Lynnhaven, Right hand side of the road, they have an indoor range with rental guns... I can't remember the name of the place, but I bought my first Bersa there in 2001 when I was in the Navy....

They had a nice selection of rentals, iirc... then again, this was over 5 years ago since I've been there.

I used to live in that area and visit often. There is VA gun supply on route 17 that has just about anything Glock that you could want. A pawn shop called A&P on Mercury ave. normally has a large selection of firearms. The Marksman in NN, a little high on price on some things, but they have a decent indoor range. If you are in to history you are in the right place with Yorktown battlefields, Jamestown, and Williamsburg right down the road.

thanks all.... sounds as iff I might miss the two gunshows in the area.... coming in the 3rd and leaving the night of the 16th...

I will check the local mongers... appreciate it

Bob's Gun Shop in downtown Norfolk has a great staff, and a good selection, including reloading supplies.
The Armory in VA Beach (exit 286B on the I-64E) usually has something interesting in. Their staff is pretty good, too.
I'm not a fan of A&P, due to the employees.
If you are military/LEO/firefighter/govt job, check out the Camp Allen Marine Corps range, it's my favorite indoor range in town.
Chickahominy WMA (a 30-40 min drive for you) has a free 100yd outdoor rifle/shotgun range.
Backwoods Leather is near you, the owner is a hell of a guy and makes great custom holsters and belts.
If you venture into Norfolk/VA Beach, don't try to drive back between 3 and 5pm, traffic is terrible. Gotta plan around that stupid tunnel. :)

You can pm me as I live in the area. For gunshops on the Peninsula

A&P Arms
Bass Pro Shops
Superior Pawn/Hampton- they have indoor range
Bob Gun Shop- Norfolk- indoor range
Superior Pawn- Virginia Beach- indoor range
Va Gun & Sports supply- NN
Wilcox Bait & Tackle-NN
Hilton Sport & Hobby-NN
Winfree- York Co

I am a member of a private gun club in York Co and you are welcome to be my guest. We have 20 bench 50 yd, 15 bench 100, skeet/trap, 50ft indoor. The indoor range is open 24/7 to members. York Co is next to NN so it would be no further than 15 miles from the furtherest point in NN

For entertainment the area has quite a bit.

Mariners Museum- see the Monitors turret as well as many more artifacts and vessels
War Memorial- haven't been in years but it was well worth seeing
Colonial Williamsburg
Jamestown
Yorktown Battlefield
Air & Space Museum- downtown Hampton
Virginia Living Museum- NN
There are a bunch more in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The ones I listed are all on the Peninsula.

I take it your a member of Lafayette? Same here...

Everything said is pretty much on the money. The traffic really sucks so time your trip if you go to the southside (norfolk/va beach). You can spend a lot of time stuck at the tunnels if your not careful.

The battlefields (in Yorktown) are kind of nice this time of year without all the tourists.

If you like a place full of smoke then you will like Winfrees. More like a smoke shop then the gun shop it use to be.

Camp Allen is good for supplies if you have an ID card. The ranges at Lafayette (off Dare road in Yorktown) are a lot closer (and way less traffic) along with the Marksman.

what town is the Tidewater Military Traders in?

Oceana is in Virginia Beach. Although I drive Harpers almost everyday and I have never seen a Tidewater Military Traders. I will have to look for it this weekend.

I am a member. Great club and I have run into old friends there as well as making new ones. I spend most of time on the 50yd range shooting my 22lr. Hopefully we can meet up there some time in the future.
